Ang Matayog na Pangarap ng PNP
At Ang Paghubog ng Kabataan
Ni Apolinario Villalobos

ANG MATAYOG NA PANGARAP NG PNP NA MABABAGO ANG UGALI NG MGA PULIS KUNG PAIIGTINGIN O PAGBUTIHIN PA ANG SISTEMA NG EDUKASYON NILA AY HANGGANG PANGARAP LANG. KUNG TALAGANG NAKATANIM NA SA ISIP NG ISANG RECRUIT NA GUSTO NIYANG PUMASOK SA PNP DAHIL GUSTO NIYANG YUMAMAN SA ANO MANG PARAAN...MANGYAYARI YAN.

ANG MGA ITINUTURO SA MGA MALALAKI AT HIGH-TECH NA UNIBERSIDAD AY HINDI BASTA-BASTA PERO PALPAK ANG KARAMIHAN SA MGA NAGTAPOS SA KANILA.
·        BAKIT ANG MGA GRADUATE AY MALI PA RIN ANG PAGBIGKAS NG LETRANG “R”?
·        BAKIT MARAMI PA RIN SA MGA GRADUATE ANG BOBO SA SECOND LANGUAGE NA ENGLISH?
·        BAKIT ANG MGA IBINOBOTO NG TAONG BAYAN SA GOBYERNO AY GUMAGAWA PA RIN NG KATIWALIAN….MGA KORAP?

ANG BASICS NG DISIPLINA AY HINDI NAITUTURO SA MGA ESKWELAHAN. ITO AY NATUTUTUHAN SA TAHANAN, ITINUTURO AT IPINAPAKITA NG MGA MAGULANG SA KANILANG KILOS AT PANANALITA. KUNG NAKIKITA NG MGA ANAK ANG ARAW-ARAW NA PAG-AAWAY NG MGA MAGULANG, ITO ANG MAITATANIM SA ISIP NILA. KUNG NAKIKITA NILANG NAGPAPALUSOT O NANLOLOKO ANG KANILANG MAGULANG, ITO ANG MATUTUTUHAN NILA, ATBP.

ANG MASAMA PA, PAGPASOK SA ESKWELA, HALOS WALANG NATUTUHAN ANG MGA BATA PAGDATING SA DISIPLINA. NI HINDI NATUTURUAN KUNG PAANONG MAGTIPID DAHIL MISMONG ILANG ESKWELAHAN ANG NAGPAPAKITA NG WALANG HUMPAY NA PAGGASTOS SA PAMAMAGITAN NG MGA REQUIREMENTS TULAD NG MGA MAHAL NA WORKBOOKS AT ASSIGNMENTS NA PAGDATING SA BAHAY, NANAY DIN PALA ANG GUMAGAWA!

HUWAG NANG MANGARAP PAGDATING SA EDUKASYON….AYAW KONG MAG-SUGGEST DAHIL DRASTIC ANG MASASABI KO TULAD NG PAGTANGGAL AGAD SA HALIP NA –RETRAINING PARA SA MGA TAMULMOL NA MGA TIWALING PULIS; PAGSARA AGAD SA MGA ESKWELAHANG MUKHANG PERA ANG MGA MAY-ARI….AT HIGIT SA LAHAT, HUWAG TANGGAPIN SA TRABAHO LALO NA PARA SA MGA SENSITIBONG POSISYON, ANG MGA BOBONG HINDI MARUNONG NG TAMANG  PAGBIGKAS NG LETRANG “R”!

The Virgin Mary

The Virgin Mary
By Apolinario Villalobos

When I asked a Catholic friend about the so many titles bestowed upon the Virgin Mary, she told me that they are based on the location of her appearance, such as Guadalupe in Mexico, hence, “Our Lady of Guadalupe”. I believed her, then. However, when I heard the “Tower of David” (Tore in David) in the litanies being read by a group of religious women who offer prayers at the wake of a dead person asking intercession for mercy, I began to question the seriousness in the practice of “naming” the Virgin Mary. Wow!...even the tower of David can intercede?...for me it is sheer stupidity!

On her title, “Our Lady of Fatima”….who is the Catholic Church referring to as the “lady”? Fatima is mentioned in the Koran as the Virgin Mary… it is a Moslem name, not Christian, so indeed, who is  the lady?...is she another woman who acts as a maid of Fatima or Virgin Mary, as in “lady-in-waiting” of queens in their royal court?

On the title, “Our Lady of Medjugorie”, if the basis is the “place” of manifestation or appearance, the signs such as the “dancing sun” and the “appearance” of the image of a woman to the children took place in the sky and not on the ground. The children had to stare at the sky to supposedly “see” her. Why not then call the woman who appeared to the children and manifested her appearance with the “dancing sun”, as “Our Lady of the Sky” or “Our Lady of the Dancing Sun” to give it a universal touch and not a selfish ownership limited to where the children live?

Every time I go home to my hometown, I would pass by a small barangay that claims a certain “Nuestra Seora de la Regla” as its patroness as shown by a signboard with such title above the door of their small chapel. What I know of “regla” is the “monthly visit” of fertile women, or scientifically referred to as menstruation. Is the title then, got to do with the appeal of fertile women to the Virgin Mary’s intercession for them to have a comfortable monthly discharge of menstrual blood?. Why go to that extent when such occurrence is normal, if indeed, it is true? Is that not asking too much?

There are claims of people about “appearances” of the Virgin Mary on doors, leaves, petals, floor tiles, etc. How sure are these people that it is the “Virgin Mary”? Do they have her photo? It should be noted that the images of saints, Virgin Mary and even Jesus, that the Catholics adore are “interpretations” of painters based on what they “imagined” per instruction given them. They even use models, as in the case of San Pedro Calungsod whose face is based on that of a popular Filipino basketball player. The images even differ according to the various cultures of Catholics all over the world. For Chinese Catholics, their Virgin Mary sometimes looks very Chinese. For Filipinos, some of the images look very Filipina, even brown in color. The Mediterranean Catholics have their own flat version of the face. And, the Japanese Catholics have their own “Japanese Madonna”. I consider this as a deception to the highest degree.

In the case of San Pedro Calungsod, I have no qualms in the use of a model, but they should have used a living relative of the saint. There are plenty of them in Cebu….why use a popular PBA basketball player?....dahil pogi?....now, that is a big shitty question to the seriousness on the part of the Catholic church in propagating Catholicisim. The guy or priest or whoever should be made responsible for this stupidity. If he is a priest, he should be booted out of the Catholic church, for what he has done has brought enormous shame to the said Christian congregation.

If something is wrong somewhere, the concerned authority should rectify it for the sake of their followers, so that the latter will not come out as victims of a foolery or deception. The bad eggs in the Catholic Church including those who gained age but still maintain their stubbornness in supporting evil instead of what is good should be defrocked!

  • Masyado siyang ma-PR at masosyal.

Retro: Tacurong at Glance during the 50's up to the early 70's

Retro: Tacurong at a Glance
During the 50’s up to the early 70’s
By Apolinario Villalobos

While Tacurong was gaining momentum towards progress as a town many years back, I remember what we enjoyed as simple luxuries when I was a kid.

Easily recalled was the Polar ice drop sold by the Valencia family. Hundreds of the cooling popsicles were loaded on the first tripper bus, Cotabato Bus Company (CBC) that left Cotabato City at dawn. After a grueling dusty travel over unpaved and potholed highway for four hours or more, the boxes filled with sticks of ice drop secured in plastic bags and protected by layers of newspapers and crushed ice and salt would finally arrive at the terminal where the patriarch of the Valencias was on hand to receive them. While some of the boxes went straight to their home where they were made more secure with packs of crushed ice, the rest went to the north entrance of the market where the ice drops were sold by the Valencia children, Remy and Fernando, while the youngest, Bobot, was spared the task as he was very young, then.

During the early 70’s an honest-to-goodness home-based ice drop business was opened by the Panes family, in front of the Notre Dame. Students would flock to their store during break time while those who preferred to sit the break period out, spent their time at the Sara’s Store where soft drinks, bread and biscuits were sold.

If we wanted to enjoy our snacks comfortably, we went to “Angelita’s Halu-Halo “where the best chiffon cake and halu-halo were served. The halu-halo’s fame has spread even to neighboring towns. The cool delicacy was served in a big bowl or tall glass with fruits in season, boiled banana, yam jam and leche flan. The joint was operated by the couple, Angelita and Pacio Palmes, helped by their children, Marites and Rene, as well as, relatives.

A few meters away, fronting the bus terminal was the Dainty Refreshment specializing in cakes, pastries with coffee and soft drinks as “downers”. There were days when the establishment served meals. It was owned and personally operated by Flor de la Rosa during her days off, as she worked as Secretary of Mayor Jose Escribano during on weekdays.

Inside the market, beside the stalls that sold tobacco and betel nut was the “Laspe’s La Paz Batchoy”. The owner brought with him his love for this Ilonggo delicacy when he joined a group of migrants from La Paz, Iloilo, to seek their fortune in Tacurong. I enjoyed gawking at the owner cut strips of meat with a sharp set of scissors. One of his daughters was my classmate in elementary, Dioleta, a sprinter who always won in track and field during athletic meets.

For oriental foods, we would go to the two Chinese restaurants, one beside the Ideal Theater, and the other between Nonoy and Prince theaters. They served, of course, as there were no other choices, the best chop suey and Chinese noodles (pancit) either sautéed or with broth – with plenty of cabbage, chayote and spring onion, as the carrot was considered a luxury, hence, scarce. The two restaurants had lodging rooms on their second floor that catered to salesmen who frequented our town.

And, of course, for the grilled chicken, locals flocked to the “Mauring’s Chicken Barbecue” owned by the Pernatos. As with other family-operated establishments, members of the family pitched in. The culinary tradition has been handed to two children who are now operating their respective barbecue restaurant using the ingredients that their parents used in the marinade.

The entertainment was provided by four “cinemas” – Real Theater in front of the north gate of the Market, Prince Theater fronting the sourtheast corner of the plaza, the Ideal Theater on the east side of Alunan Highway, and Nonoy Theather, fronting the Ulangkaya building. The cinemas provided wooden tick-infested seats. As they were not sound-proof, the dialog of the actors could be heard out in the street. We were amused then, by the moans of actors when erotic films were shown. Those with “added sexy scenes” were advertised with hand-written, “Plus-Boom” (plus bomba), as the erotic films were then called, “bomba films”.

An ice plant provided our town and the surrounding areas with the very important commodity as it was also used by fish vendors. The downtown outlet of blocks of ice was owned by the Sanque family. The Marias family got their ice from the Sanque outlet for the ice cream that they prepared to be sold around the town, in which one of the sons, Jaime also helped. Later on, another ice cream maker opened his home-based “factory” which was peddled by a high school classmate, Rogelio Gallega.

The office supplies and a handful of books were sold by the Goodwill Bookstore. First class fabrics were sold in a market stall by the Sandigs, and motorcycles were the exclusive goods of the Paragas family. Even with a small town such as our place, there was already an agent for insurance policy – Felipe Lapuz who was the local manager of Philam Life.

Later, better hotels were opened, such as the one operated by the couple, Menandro and Prax Lapuz, located near the town plaza; and, Edgie Hotel owned by Eddie Lopez that occupied the east end of the commercial building where Ideal Theater was also located. The entrance of the hotel was right beside the Uy store, owned by the father of my classmate in elementary, Jimmy Uy who later married Elsie Dajay, another classmate.

There were no beerhouses then. Those who would like to get tipsy, went to the carinderia of the Gialogos inside the market where the stalls of the dried fish were also located. The Gialogos sold the freshest/sweetish and the best “bahal” (day-old) coconut sap wine (tuba), served on “Bols” jars. Finger foods were grilled tilapia, mudfish, gurami, and catfish. Some days, the elder Gialogo would cook “dinuguan” (pork innards cooked in ginger and pig’s blood). The son, Ernesto who was also a classmate, continued the carinderia tradition, minus the tuba, with his restaurant in front of the Notre Dame campus.

Much later, as Mayor Escribano loved music, he opened the Bayanihan Club near where the market/public toilet was located. The “unit 1” of the The Fireband provided the entertainment, with singers Helen, Lito and sometimes, Femy Alcon and Grace Perales, consistent winners in the “amateur” singing contest. The “unit 2” of the Fireband during the time, played at a popular night club in Pasay City….that was how the two bands became self-liquidating, as the players who doubled as town firemen had no fixed wage. The band got “caught” by the sweeping camera during the filming of a Fernando Poe, Jr. film….I forgot the title of the film

As a further manifestation of his love for the good life, the mayor opened the first “resort” in the middle of the town – inside the plaza, complete with an elevated swimming pool to the delight of a Spanish immigrant, Mr. Fernandez as he was fond of swimming and had the prowess for board diving. The facility also provided the mayor with a comfortable office as it was shaded by plenty of trees. What was nice about the mayor was that, he allowed the drying of rice and corn grains on the basketball court and the circular skating rink of the town plaza.

The medical services were provided during the time by the Baroquillo and Ventura clinics, later joined by the Tamondong Hospital. The biggest stores were those of the Suana’s, Lee Kay Kee, Paciente’s and Rapacon’s. Dental Services were provided by Dr. Casipe and Dra. Tabuga. Later on, an optical clinic was opened by Dra. Pareas, beside which the first boutique, Noeleen’s, was also opened by Nenita Astillero-Bernardo.

Today, the City of Tacurong is making big leaps as big establishments compete with each other in filling up commercial voids that used to be swampy patches of land.

Too Much Familiarity Breeds Abuse Leading to Loss of Respect

TOO MUCH FAMILIARITY BREEDS ABUSE
LEADING TO LOSS OF RESPECT
By Apolinario Villalobos

If a person opens himself up with overconfidence, thereby, exposing his weaknesses, he is bound to be abused and disrespected. He should not expect understanding from ALL the people with whom he deals. In any community or group where a person circulates, detractors and covert enemies are always present who will not hesitate to grab every opportunity from the unguarded moments of the overconfident person.

This is the situation of the president Rodrigo Duterte and PNP Chief, Rolando de la Rosa. Their tough personality and honest character have no match to the traitor’s selfish and evil intention. This happened to Cesar of Rome and Jesus Christ….they are lessons to be learned.

Duterte and de la Rosa should at this time, distance themselves a little bit from their “trusted friends”. Duterte should remember that he is in the tumultuous arena of Philippine politics where players easily change color to suit their needs. On the other hand, the Manila guys that the two are dealing with as regards the checking of illegal drugs, are not dumb not to understand that they are being used. And, being toughened in their kind of enterprising job, these “wise” guys will definitely not allow this happen without earning clandestinely.

The too much camaraderie that Duterte and de la Rosa show to their supposedly trusted people is what the latter exploit to go on with their well-entrenched designs long before they (Duterte and de la Rosa) took office.

The “signs” that can be perceived as regards the abuse being committed against Duterte and de la Rosa are the continued proliferation of police shenanigans, using the “tokhang” as another alibi. Shamefully, the already known “hulidap” has assumed another name….”tokhang”. How can authorities deny this when the concerned agents of authority use dubious documents which for the ordinary victims look authentic?

To let the police feel that he is serious in his intentions, Duterte should stop mouthing his support to them, as it is already implied or understood. Emphasizing such “support” in speeches that he deliver, just emboldens the “bad eggs” in the ranks of the police. All he should do is just instruct them to do their best if they want to keep their job….and for the sake of the “good eggs”. Another best act that he can do is give instruction to de la Rosa to immediately fire the erring police. On the other hand, de la Rosa should act with dispatch.

Nimfa Gromio Castillo: Nag-night Class noong High School

The Blissful Family of Luis and Paciencia Garcia of Tacurong City

Posted on Sunday 22 January 2017

The Blissful Family of Luis and Paciencia Garcia
of Tacurong City
By Apolinario Villalobos

The couple, Luis and Paciencia Garcia (Tatay Luis and Nanay Pacing) opened the first bakery in our town during the 1950s. It had a big wood-fired oven fed by big chunks of wood, usually, “enyam” or “bignay” and acacia which grew in abundance throughout the extent of the town. I would play on stacked logs in front of the bakery in the afternoon before finally making it home from the dried fish stall of my parents in the market. Practically, every able-bodied member of the family took part in its operation, especially, in manning the counter and the cash box. The Garcias were close to our parents and sometimes our mother would linger awhile in front of the bakery on her way to the market, to chat with both Nanay Pacing and Tatay Luis. In my desire to earn at an early age, I peddled their pan de sal around the town at dawn before I went to school, using a box of Darigold, a popular brand of milk during the time. I was in Grade Three at the time.

During the regular Sunday singing contest held at the town plaza, courtesy of the late mayor, Jose Escribano, paper bags of bread from the bakery were among the prizes. The judges were so strict that at the hint of an off-key, the contestant was disqualified at the sound of a bell. A Levita girl with her golden voice was the consistent winner. The couple also used to donate cookies for the yearly “Flores” celebration held every May. The cookies were served as snacks to the kids who participated in catechetical sessions during which Marian songs and prayers were taught. At the height of evacuation to our town of families displaced from the surrounding areas during the 70’s, they gave the local office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) specially-discounted price for the bread that the agency purchased.

Tatay Luis had the opportunity to delve into the local politics with successful attempts, but he did not pursue this particular calling, as it got stinky, the height of which was the assassination of the town judge inside the church while he was attending the Sunday Mass. Free from the political clutch, Tatay Luis and Nanay Pacing devoted their time instead, to religious and civic activities of the town, especially, during fiestas.

All members of the Garcia family are achievers, successful in their chosen career and enjoying the fruit of their labor, except for one whose advocacy brought her to her untimely demise. She was Marlene (Esperat), the youngest in the brood, and who worked for the government, particularly, as the Action Officer of the resident Ombudsman of the Department of Agriculture, but left it posthaste, when she discovered unbecoming activities. She later found a niche in the field of journalism, both broadcast and print. In her paramount desire to help her country, she later exposed the anomalies that she stumbled upon at the cost her life. She was murdered, obviously, by a hired killer right inside her home. It took more than 5 years before the Ombudsman finally filed a solid case against the suspects, the then, Agriculture Secretary Luis “Chito” Lorenzo, Undersecretary Joselyn “Joc-Joc” Bolante and three others.

Practically, the Garcia siblings were popular campus personalities at the Notre Dame Boys and Girls Departments, what with their strong personality characterized by inherent leadership quality that made them shine in scholastic and extra- curricular activities. The family was known for their closeness that brought them together almost every year during a reunion, in which cousins were also in attendance. Other special occasions were also reasons for them to be together. That was how the good-natured though strict patriarch and the jolly matriarch brought up the family. The eldest of the brood, ultra-active, Valmie, with her crown of thick curly hair, was always the life of any occasion as she let out her antics and biting, though, funny remarks.

I was fortunate to meet Bong (Larry) and Pangkek at Dagat-dagatan, Malabon many years back when I visited another town mate, Judith Bides-Ramiscal who excitedly told me that they were neighbors. After having told of their address I immediately surprised them with my visit. My path crossed with that of Valmie’s during the 50th foundation anniversary of our school, the Notre Dame of Tacurong. At the closing ceremony of the reunion highlighted by a community dancing on the school grounds, she was among the alumni who gleefully bumped shoulders to the beat of the festive music, still the spritely gal that she was during her high school days.  We were practically exchanging shouts of greeting above the din of the ear-splitting non-stop disco sound. And, the next time we again met after many years, was via the internet – the facebook. That social medium also got me  touched base with her younger brother, Bong.

The Garcias have definitely impressed the mark of their own legacy on the hefty foundation of the City of Tacurong while she was going through the challenges from simple politics gone stinky and threats of cultural unrest. And for that, Valmie and her siblings have their courageous and generous father, Luis, as well as, jovial mother, Paciencia, to thank!

Marlene Garcia-Esperat and the Plight of Other "Whistle Blowers"

Marlene Garcia-Esperat
and the Plight of Other “Whistle Blowers”
By Apolinario Villalobos

When I saw the photo of the late Marlene Garcia-Esperat who was murdered because she exposed the anomalies at the Department of Agriculture, I was overwhelmed with a feeling of devastation and palpitated with anger. She was so young and unfortunately, her ideals cut short her dreams. She exposed the anomalies at the Department of Agriculture which was then under Secretary Luis “Chito” Lorenzo whose cohorts were his Underscretary Joselyn “Joc-Joc” Bolante and three more personalities, involving the purchase of millions of pesos worth of fertilizer.

Marlene made the exposế when she left the Office of the Ombudsman where she was the Action Office of the resident Ombudsman of the Department of Agriculture.  Not long after, she was silenced by a hired gunman right inside her home on the fateful 24th day of March, 2005, as she was obviously, unprotected. She should have been moving around with a security because of her exposếs, but she was not. At the time of her death, she was living with her family in the City of Tacurong, her birthplace. The proud parents are Luis and Paciencia Garcia.

The “whistle blowers” risk their career and security of their family after making the painful decision to spill out the proverbial beans of anomalies that they accidentally discover. Some of them make the crucial decision on their own volition while others had to be coaxed into cooperation, and even intimidated by eager prosecutors. Promises of security and financial assistance are made by the government, but are unfortunately, short-lived as the “agreement” had to be “renewed”.

Sandra Cam who stands out among the “whistle blowers” organized them for the convenience of the NGOs which are helping them. Also, to make them cohesive every time they make demands in one voice. Unfortunately, the last time that this group was heard was when Cam surfaced during the celebrated hearings of de Lima at the Senate….perhaps, only because, de Lima is her mortal enemy. The big question is where are the rest of them? Have they finally recanted their statements in exchange for big sums or unfortunately, silenced forever?

The “whistle blowers” are actually witnesses, who got tagged with such reference because they are supposed to have blown the whistle to alert the government about certain anomalies. But, for how long can they blow the whistle with the kind of government that we have? The expense for their protection is dependent on the budget of the concerned agencies, but the approval of which is also dependent on the whims of the Senate. Worse, the approval of the protection sometimes is granted long after witnesses has put their security in jeopardy when they divulged information at the hearing venue.

How many more Marlene Garcia-Esperats will make a sacrifice to make the government realize the loop-holes of its “witness protection program”? How could the Duterte administration use this program to enhance his drive against illegal drugs if prospective witnesses have lost their trust in such program? What is their chance of still standing alive and kicking after his six-year term? …AND, WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT’S DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE DOING ABOUT IT?

POL SAULOG AT MAGNO PADUA

Posted on Friday 20 January 2017

Isabel.

City of Tacurong...Oozing with Goodwill at the Crossroads of Progress

Posted on Thursday 19 January 2017

City of Tacurong…Oozing with Goodwill
At the Crossroads of Progress
By Apolinario Villalobos

The city spearheads the rousing endeavor of Sultan Kudarat province to move forward. She practically stands at the crossroads of South Cotabato, North Cotabato/Maguindanao/Davao, and Cotabato City. Such location is fittingly symbolized by the rotunda that encloses the concrete image of “talakudong” (head covering) from which her name has been derived, although, much earlier, she was referred to as “Pamansang”.

Even before she was weaned from the political cuddles of Buluan, hordes of immigrants from Luzon and Visayas had been attracted by the prospective ventures that lay under the thick grassy mantle of her swamplands. The immigrants braved the mosquitoes when they arrived at the port of Cotabato City from which they equally braved the ride on the frail bancas and crude ferries that navigated the Rio Grande de Mindanao with destinations such as Buluan and Dulawan.

When she was yet a barrio of Buluan, the trek  to Tacurong from the former, over grassy trails according to Ms. Nenita Bernardo and the late Mr. Menandro Lapuz took almost half a half day. Those who came via Dulawan had to take the trail through Lambayong (Sultan sa Barongis), or the much easier though longer trek via Maganoy onward through Esperanza on the highway that leads to Isulan from where they turned left to cross the Lower Katungal or Kapingkong River, until finally reaching the sparsely inhabited “sentro” with its muddy roads.

Today, the city is under the administration of Mayor Lina Montilla with Dr. Joseph George Lechonsito assisting her, being the Vice-Mayor. And, just like any local government that needs an information machinery that must be effective, for Tacurong, it is provided by the Information Team of Allan Freno, a soft-spoken and unassuming proud product of Notre Dame of Tacurong College, and whose office publishes a very informative magazine, “The Goodwill”. It contains just anything about what had been done and what should be done, yet…in simply-written English language.  The compactness of the publication is such that the layout has been made to accommodate as many information as possible, without compromising the artistry and color. Visitors to the city are advised to check out the office of Mr. Freno for a copy, at the City Hall.

The city prides in her Baras Bird Sanctuary and Monte Vicenteaux Resort which has been accredited by the Department of Tourism, lately. The two touristic destinations can easily be accessed on any tricycle that can be hired, the cost for which can be negotiated. The bird sanctuary is located along the bank of the Kapingkong River and shaded with bamboo grooves and other age-old hard woods, not far from sprawling rice fields and African palm plantations. As the morning sun breaks the horizon, flocks of white egrets could be seen hovering over the heavily-foliaged canopy of trees and creaking bamboos that sway at the mildly blowing wind. The Monte Vicenteaux Resort is located a little farther, at New Passi, where it breaks the wide expanse of rice fields at the foot of the low-lying hill of Magon and fed by naturally flowing spring. The main pool is semi-Olympic sized around which are cottages that could be hired. Below the pools are adjoining ponds of tilapia, halu-an (mudfish) and pantat (catfish). On harvest days, the resort welcome even the walk-in visitors who would like to make a purchase. Due to be finished are the facilities for overnight- staying guests. In the meantime, according to the management, those who would like to use their tents can make arrangements for the tenting area to be assigned. Other conveniences and comforts are provided by stores and clean restrooms. Added features that make the resort functional are the activity areas provided with adjustable stages made of steel segments.

The “tag” of the city has been appropriately chosen- “goodwill”. If “goodwill” stands for friendliness, kindness, care and many more positive descriptions of a person’s character, then Tacurong really deserves it. A visitor can just look around to see happy and smiling faces of locals… the young calling their elders either “uncle”, “kol” (abbreviated uncle), “auntie”, “manong”,  “manang”, or “sir”and “ma’am”. With that, how can a visitor not feel pampered with respect and assurance that his or her stay is guaranteed with a warm congeniality and safety? The first time I experienced this “goodwillish” attitude was when I heard a young passenger, obviously a student, who was with me on the same aircon van from Davao when I went home for a quick visit. In a very tender voice, she told the driver, “lihug para , sir…” (please stop, sir…) when she got off at the vicinity of rotunda where the Talakudong landmark is located.

In the city, you can still buy ripe bananas per bunch, vegetables, water melon from surrounding barangays, and cavendish banana from Datu Paglas – all at ridiculously low price. The local coffee is what I would like to specially mention because for me, it is much better than the “barako” of Batangas. I am a coffee drinker and I know how the coffee should be pleasantly bitter to be called “real coffee”. Here, you can also buy the healthy mix of ground coffee and yellow corn. Add to those the black bars of dry molasses, the real sugar cane and coconut sap vinegars with variations that come with ginger or langkawas, garlic and really red hot chili, that are sold along the highway that traverses Tuwato, the city’s boundary with Buluan.

The city likewise, serves as the outlet for the freshly harvested and dried mudfish (dalag or halu-an), tilapia, and catfish (pantat or hito) that come from Buluan. On market days, even the “panyalam” a sweet, brown-colored and sotanghon-like dry noodles, though finer, can be found sold alongside various rice cakes. And, of course, the visitor should not miss the colorful “tikug” mats and other handwoven crafts made of rattan. When locusts infest the rice and corn fields, the locals get back at them by frying them into savory crispiness flavored with plenty of toasted garlic and chili, then sold at the market per small tumbler or drinking glass, and this was what I chanced upon when I last visited the city. I shamefully consumed one glassful at one standing in just a few minutes, enjoying the crispy chili-hot delicacy that was also enjoyed by the Israelites while they went around the desert for 40 years before finally allowed to “enter” the Promised Land!

Late in the afternoon until around 10 in the evening, the marketside portion of the Tacurong-Isulan highway comes alive with local cafes shaded with tarpaulin. The open-air carenderias compete with airconditioned hamburger and pizza joints, as well as, grilled food stands that sell barbecued fish, chicken and pork. Beside them are piles of oranges from Tulunan, pineapples from Polomolok (bundle of 3 for Php20-50), guavas and mangoes. Popular hamburger outlets, pizza parlors and unli-rice joints have joined the rush to have a share of the city’s economic upsurge, along with equally popular drug stores that sell generic and branded medicines.

Culturally and spiritually, Tacurong is one good model for what Filipinos dream of as “unity in diversity”. Those from Luzon and Visayas live side by side with the Iranuns, Maguindanaoans and Maranaos. The stillness of dawn is broken by the call for the morning prayer that emanates from the loudspeaker perched on the minaret of the Islamic Mosque, while the bells of the Catholic church peal from their belfry. The diversified cultures admirably meld as shown by Muslims who speak fluent Visayan, Tagalog and Ilocano, and Christians who have made the ever-useful malong and tubaw (head covering) as part of their wardrobe, as well as, delight at the peculiar taste of “pastil”, the Muslim version of the “binalot”, and whose topping vary from the shredded chicken to tilapia, halu-an (mudfish), or pantat (catfish).

The City of Tacurong which has gained a foothold in the tourism map due to its Talakudong Festival, Baras Bird Sanctuary, and Monte Vienteaux Resort, can be visited via Davao City, General Santos City (Gensan) and Cotabato City. One can take a flight to any of the cities mentioned and at the airport take a taxi to any of the bus and aircon van stations for the scheduled trips to Tacurong.  As for the accommodation, the city has plenty of comfortable aircon and non-aircon lodging inns and hotels to choose from.

I would like to say that the smile of the Tacurongnons is more than a greeting that if spoken would sound something like, “Maayo nga pag-abot!”…an Hiligaynon equivalent of “Welcome”.

For the interested parties, please Google search, “Tacurong City” for more of her historic, political, economic, cultural details, and photos. The mentioned festival, resort and bird sanctuary can also be specifically searched.
