Ang Mga Dilaw at Disintunado (Out of Tune) na Mga Opisyal ng Pilipinas

Ang Mga Dilaw at Disintunado (Out of Tune)

The Benefits of Titanium

THE BENEFITS OF TITANIUM

By Apolinario Villalobos

The first time I encountered the word “titanium” was when a friend told me that he was saving money for a titanium implant for his son whose thigh was due for an operation. His son figured in an accident and has injured his thigh. The amount he mentioned was staggering.

When I checked on titanium, I found out that space and aircrafts use it due to its lightness and durability. It has also become a fad as a jewelry, but commands a high price. On the other hand, the light gray/ blackish metal also has benefits which offset its unglamorous color which is lacking of sparkle and sheen.

Worn as a bracelet, ring, necklace, or wristwatch, the metal transfers the oxygen that it absorbs to the skin of the wearer. Wearing a titanium accessory near an inflamed area also reduces its swelling. This is the reason why many people prefer to wear jewelries made of titanium than any other kind of metal, especially gold, to alleviate the irritation that result from the onset of arthritis. And, as an implant, it has better and more comfortable effect than stainless steel because it is affected by the change in temperature.

Titanium jewelries can be purchased at high-end jewelry shops. A watch made of titanium would cost between Php10-15,000, a ring costs not less than Php3,000, and a bracelet is between Php5-10,000 depending on the design.

I got my first titanium bracelet from a junk collector in appreciation for a tarpaulin, several packs of diaper for his baby and a thermos. He told me that he found it while rummaging in a garbage dump and after washing the muddy bracelet, took the fancy of wearing it. I refused to accept the gift but he insisted and to show my appreciation, I wore it on the spot.

When I washed it at home, I read the word etched on the lock and discovered the finely etched “Titanium”. My friend was not aware that he gave me a “treasure” so that when I had a chance, I went back to where he was sorting his junks and told him what I discovered. He did not believe me while looking at the light gray/blackish jewelry and just laughed for he thought that I was joking. Obviously, he was only familiar with silver and stainless jewelries that glisten. Also, he told me that he has no habit of getting back what he has given, so I just thanked him again.

Isda, kabebe, perlas, at iba’t ibang gulaman.

Noon yan….

Dahil ngayo’y sadyang nakakalungkot
Mga pangyayari na napakamasalimuot
Mga biyayang likas na bigay ng Maykapal
Napariwarang lahat….mistulang ginahasa

Respect for Time, Discipline and Death

Respect for Time, Discipline and Death
By Apolinario Villalobos

Practically, everybody is familiar with the adage, “we cannot turn back the hands of time”. But still, many do not have a full understanding of what it means and its effect to our life. They may also appreciate such adage that serves as a reminder, but they are not serious about it.

Time is the most important factor that can affect life as the world is at its mercy. Regretting for the lost time is like crying over spilled milk or precious water. We may cry our eyes dry and punch our chest with clinched fist while uttering hundreds of mea culpa, but what have been spilled can no longer be recovered. We cry over lost opportunities because we were late for appointments. We lost a prospective job because we were late for the interview. We missed our flight because we did not wake up early, etc.

Anything that is not respected is disregarded or taken for granted, and that is what many people do to time most often. Many forgot that time is used to reckon our physical and mental development, how we fare as we trudge along the road of life, and in giving us a chance to change for the better. We always say, “…give me time” which simply means, “…give me a chance”.

Time is so much a part of our life that many people become uneasy if they do not glance at a watch every hour of the day. Everything that we do is controlled by time, from waking up until we go back to bed. Time controls our job, our meals, even our use of the toilet. We even use it to warn others about their misdoings by telling them, “how many times did I tell you….”. Even our pulse and heartbeat are timed to check if we are physically fit.

If time controls us, discipline compels us to abide by its ticking, such that husbands must be home before midnight, employees must be at their post at certain designated time, minors must be home not later than ten in the evening, meals should be taken at certain times of the day till evening, medicines should be taken at certain times, etc. Respect for time and utmost discipline cannot be separated as without the other, our life and the world will be in a topsy-turvy state.

We should also be thankful to the guy who discovered time and those who invented gadgets that we need to measure the extent of our life in this world. Time tells us when we should “depart” from this world, unless it is cut short by unexpected events resulting to what we call as as “untimely” death.

Unawain sina Trillanes at de Lima

Unawain Sina Trillanes at de Lima

The Writer

The Writer
By Apolinario Villalobos

A true writer should be sensitive to the feelings of others, be they read as expressly written or viewed as shown through actuations. He should be able to develop any form of literary expression out of spoken words or written “bullet statements”. With facebook as an example, an adept writer should be able to develop a poem out of the comments on a certain posted photo. Comments about the photo are the “thoughts” of the facebook owner who posted it and a poem that is developed out of them by a writer should be rightly attributed to him….the writer being just the “editor”.

The writer should not constrain himself from writing the name of the source of the thoughts in the byline of a literary expression, be it a poem or an essay. Many people are frustrated writers and poets. They have thoughts that float in their mind, but they just do not know how to capture them. They may enumerate the words down but they do not know which to put ahead of the rest, which of them to comprise the content, and which word to end their presentation. This is where the writer-friend comes in….lend a hand….put substance to the words or discerned thoughts that are not yet expressed but are expected, as feelings are universal and interpretations vary only according to situation, but words are the same.

Some people show signs of literary talent but are shy to let them out. Their latent talent is discerned through the kind of words that they use in making comments on facebook posts or in the way they use them. These are the people who should be given utmost understanding. In the end, if the effort has made somebody happy, exert more of it….help many more shy people. This is what a “writer” should do…encourage others to express themselves.

Baka may masagasaang ibang karapatan
Dahil sa sobrang kasakiman.

Upang mabuhay kailangan nating magsikap

Notes:
Sakim- greedy
Kasakiman-greed
Maghinay-hinay – slowly, carefully
Naluklok – placed in position
Naitalaga- appointed
Pangangamkam- grabbing
Saysay- use, usefulness

On the Exploitation of the Weak

On the Exploitation of the Weak
 By Apolinario Villalobos

Natural resources are gifts and blessings from the Creator of the universe and as such should be properly and justly exploited as a show of respect to the Giver. However, the problem in this world is that, practically, the strong overruns the weak in their greedy effort to control anything that got to do with survival. Looking back, history is a mute witness to this desire of powerful nations such as Portugal, Spain, Holland, England, and later, America, Russia, Germany, China, and Japan. Earlier in the history of nations, Portugal and Spain, practically divided the world into two hemispheres for appropriation between the two of them. Later, war was used as an instrument for the appropriation of the weak nations among the strong ones.

Much later, with the blazed marine trails that lead to practically all continents, strong nations overran all of them, with America and her “Manifest Destiny” ideals, leading the pack. Her obsessive drive was masked with a supposedly noble intention to save the “barbarian” and “pagan” inhabitants of forcefully occupied lands from their misery of ignorance, although, beneath it, was the desire to bleed the lands of their natural resources, and the Philippines was among those that suffered this harrowing fate. It should be noted that long before the Spaniards colonized the Philippines, the early inhabitants had a healthy commercial intercourse with other nations, aside from having their own spiritual leaning which was Mohammedan or Islamic. The Americans did not “convert” the Filipinos into Christianity, as when they came, the Spanish colonizers already did it….all they did was turn the face of the Catholic inhabitants towards Protestantism.

If our forefathers fought for the preservation of our nation’s patrimonial rights, today, the Philippine government practically offers it to the highest bidders- whoever they are, if foreigner, the better because of their dollar. The Philippine Constitution meanwhile haplessly and practically turned into a doormat, as provisions after provisions are changed to fit the desires of foreign investors. The apex of irresponsibility was the passing of a law authored by Gloria Arroyo when she was yet a senator, allowing foreigners to own the 100% rights over claimed land intended for mining…this is the root cause of the scandalous mining incidents in the country that to date, have even claimed lives.

The Philippine Mining Law passed in 1995 is a glaring example of how lawmakers can be so naïve to the far-reaching effects of nature-related ventures in the country. They do not seem to understand what displacement, pollution, cultural debacle, immorality, and corruption mean. All that they perceive are the dollar and peso, as well as, the glitter of gold…gains that find their way to the pocket of the corrupt government officials instead of the inhabitants of the affected lands. From a national point of view, practically, no significant benefit has ever been “felt”, “observed”, or “enjoyed”, by the citizens, in case the gains have reached the national coffer. Tangible projects on which these gains are spent, are hideously pockmarked with commissions at different levels of transaction….so, what benefit are the greedy talking about?

Soil erosion and flood are the effect of the careless exploitation of natural resources while on the part of the inhabitants, forced displacements that lead to their migration to slums of urban areas where they eventually succumb to the pummeling of poverty, are the dismal disheartening results, made more grievous by the wearing down of their cultural values. Many girls and boys turn to prostitution to help eke out a living for their starving families. Families live on sidewalks and “mobile homes” – the pushcart which is the most practical way to carry around collected junks from garbage dumps. Fathers who turned “barkers” in jeepney terminals are lured into easy money by big time drug pushers, dangled temptation that they bit, for which they paid with their life.

Catholic bishops and human rights advocates kuno wonder how and why the above-mentioned Filipinos became bad, to the extent of being killed due to their involvement in drug trafficking. These hypocrites are obviously short-sighted because what they see are just the slums where the unfortunate victims live. They fail or refuse to look beyond the slums, so that they will be able to perceive where they came from….and, what made them endure the hellish life in the city!

The Grim Prospect of Exploiting Ligwasan Marsh and Tampakan

The Grim Prospect of Exploiting
Ligwasan Marsh and Tampakan
By Apolinario Villalobos

Ligwasan Marsh is touted to be very rich in mineral deposits and natural gas, even deuterium. But then, since time immemorial, the marshland has been home to indigenous freshwater fishes of Mindanao…their breeding area, to put it straight. It also offers relief to flooded areas in central Mindanao by serving as some sort of catch basin. If it gets exploited and got drained of its resources, the simplistic conclusion would be: even the lowly tilapia and mudfish would be procured in Bulacan and Batangas in Luzon! How can fish and fresh water plants survive the pollution from chemicals and eventual disturbance from drilling equipments?

If ever fish farms would be establish by entrepreneurs for the breeding to sustain the supply of indigenous freshwater fish for local consumption, the choking effect to the consumers will be the same as prices would be dictated not only by big fish farmers but also, by the middlemen. Eventually, high-tech foreign fish farmers would trek into the Promised Land and form corporate conglomerate with local partners…a sure ball for the creation of “cartel” So, we go back again to the issues of “unequal opportunity”, unfair labor practices of foreign employers, etc. At the end, who reaps the “blessings”?....of course, foreign investors who send back their earnings to their country. Meanwhile, polluted water flows to rivers and streams down to the coastal waters of Mindanao...gain for our long-ranged devastation.

On the Tampakan Open-pit mining project, aside from the pollution of water resources and soil, farmers shall be displaced from their farms. A B’laan family has been massacred for fighting the aggression on their ancestral domain. Definitely, not only will the displaced tribal families suffer from the consequences that will result to pollution but also those who live on the plains and who depend on the river system for the irrigation of their farms and water supply for their livestock and homes.

The crucial choice now is between the direct benefits that financiers shall reap and the uncertain benefits for the communities due to corrupt practices. Another choice is between the 15-20 years short-term employment benefits and the perpetual damage to the land that shall affect generations to come.

ON THE ABUSIVE EXPLOITATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES
AND THE PHILIPPINES
By Apolinario Villalobos

THE UTTER EXPLOITATION OF THE NATURAL RESOURCES THAT EVEN GOES BEYOND THE BORDER OF ABUSE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS AMONG THE CAUSES OF POVERTY, FLOOD, AND MOST OF ALL CORRUPTION. IN THE PHILIPPINES, THE GOOD INTENT OF THE SECRETARY OF DENR, GINA LOPEZ IN THIS REGARD, IS UNFORTUNATELY, BEING THWARTED BY SECTORS THAT, OBVIOUSLY, HAVE STAKES IN THIS INDUSTRY. IT IS SO SAD TO NOTE THAT SOME OF THEM ARE NOW PART OF THE DUTERTE ADMINISTRATION.

MINING HAS DISPLACED FARMERS, POLLUTED WATER RESOURCES AND BAYS, AND DENUDED FORESTS RESULTING TO FLOODING…AND THESE HAVE BEEN HAPPENING FOR DECADES. THE SITUATION HAS BEEN WORSENED BY THE LAW AUTHORED BY GLORIA ARROYO IN 1995 WHEN SHE WAS YET A SENATOR, ALLOWING FOREIGNERS 100% OWNERSHIP OF LAND THAT THEY CLAIM FOR MINING. THE SITUATION GOT WORST DURING THE ADMINISTRATION OF BENIGNO AQUINO III THAT SAW THE SEEMINGLY UNCONTROLLED ISSUANCE OF PERMITS THAT ENRICHED EVEN LOCAL OFFICIALS.

IF THE BISHOPS AND HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATES KUNO ARE REALLY INTERESTED TO HELP THE FILIPINOS, THIS IS THE AREA THAT THEY SHOULD STEP INTO. UNCHECKED ABUSIVE EXPLOITATION OF THE NATURAL RESOURCES OF THE COUNTRY HAVE A FAR- REACHING MAGNITUDE THAT COULD BE GREATER THAN DRUGS THAT AFFECTS HUMAN LIFE ONLY.

MINING NOT ONLY RESULTS TO THE SLOW DETERIORATION OF THE NATURAL RESOURCES, POVERTY AND CRUMBLING OF CULTURAL VALUES BUT ALSO, THE WEATHER SYSTEM THAT DIRECTLY AFFECTS THE WHOLE EARTH!

The Tampakan Open-pit Mining in South Cotabato (Mindanao)...a virtual hell if pushed through

THE TAMPAKAN OPEN-PIT MINING IN SOUTH COTABATO (MINDANAO)
…a virtual hell if pushed through
By Apolinario Villalobos

Tampakan is located in South Cotabato and has been in the midst of controversy since many years back because of the interest of Saggitarius Mining, Inc. (SMI) to mine its mineral deposits. At a glance, the following are what the issue is all about:
  • It could be the biggest mining project in the country with a pegged financing of USD5.9billion.
  • It is believed to be the world’s largest gold prospect to date.
  • Tampakan site is believed to contain 2.94 billion tons of minerals that include copper at 15million tons of copper and 18 million ounces of gold.
  • The value of production for twenty (20) years is USD37billion.
  • The site covers an aggregate area of about 10,000 hectares that include (Tampakan) South Cotabato, (Columbio) Sultan Kudarat, (Kiblawan) Davao del Sur, and Malungon (Sarangani).
  • Henry Sy of the SM Group is interested in investing in the project.
  • SMI is being controlled by the Alcantara family (“Sagittarius Mines Inc., the owner of the Tampakan project, used to be 62.5-percent owned by Glencore while the remaining 37.5 percent was owned by Indophil Resources NL, which is, in turn, controlled by the Alcantara group through Alsons Prime Investments Corp. (Apic). Glencore’s exit allowed the Alcantara group to consolidate its control of the Tampakan project by exercising its right of first refusal.”)
  • The Tampakan mining site is located only 50 kilometers from General Santos, the hub of commerce in South Cotabato, with its international-standard port and airport; Koronadal and Tacurong City are near Columbio and between them flows the Buluan River which is the outlet of the Rio Grande de Mindanao which partially flows to Ligwasan Marsh.
  • The project is expected to realize Php1trillion.

The open-pit mining at Tampakan shall virtually turn the covered areas into hell, what with the displacement of farmers, pollution of all the rivers, streams that eventually towards the bays, and the open pit itself which according to Secretary Gina Lopez herself, is equivalent to 700 football fields, and much much much worst, shall not be covered after the operations!

In view of the above, Minadanaoans who live around the area should unite to block the project and provide DENR Secretary Lopez with a “noisy support”. The mining operation if pushed through shall spell the damnation of practically the whole of southern Mindanao because of the harm from its pollutants – chemicals and exhaust fumes. We do not need this kind of investment!

On the Abusive Exploitation of the Natural Resources and the Philippines

The Dear Price of Promised Progress from the Mining Industry

The Dear Price of Promised Progress
From the Mining Industry
In the Philippines
By Apolinario Villalobos

Once mined, a particular parcel of land can never recover lost yields – minerals in various forms that sustain life and top soil that enforce the earth’s crust. And, that is what is happening to the archipelagic Philippines which is being eaten up by the industry. Today, the tumultuous political atmosphere of the country is further jittered by the decision of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to cancel the permit of many mining firms, a decision which is not to the delight of some sectors, especially, those that have been directly and financially affected due to their stakes. A big howl also comes from the purported human rights advocates who use loss of job as their tool for protest, as if only mining offers the opportunity to earn and nothing else.

The root cause of the swarming of mining ventures in the country, mostly foreign-based, is the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 which was authored by Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo when she was yet, a senator. It allowed foreigners to have a 100% ownership of land areas that they have claimed for mining. The blanket authority eventually paved the way towards the virgin mountains and forests of the country for any foreigner who was willing to invest in mining ventures. Rainforests were cleared, hills and agricultural lands were excavated, and chemicals polluted rivers, streams that flowed to the estuaries and coastal waters…and farmers lost their farms. At the rate abuse of the country’s natural resources are going, this law needs to be revoked.

During the presidential incumbency of Benigno Aquino III, the issuance of mining permits multiplied which enriched even local government officials. Although, some of the farmers were employed by the mining firms, their pay was meager compared to the former yields of their farm. The mushrooming of temporary mining communities resulted to the proliferation of crimes and prostitutions that literally eroded the values of the once sedate villagers and scandalized their once laid back way of life. The polluted air and water brought about diseases that emaciated the once healthy locals and the prices of basic commodities, especially, food, soared. Practically, the industry that has been hoped to bring progress, instead, devastated communities and their inhabitants.

Although, the financial effect to the country’s economy by the move to stop the mining operation can be recovered from other ventures, the recovery from its effects to the people and community could definitely be felt for a long time, as it involves cleansing of the polluted soil, the water beneath it and what flows on the surface. The government would definitely be helpless, in fact, more helpless, as shown by its inutile effort in tackling other problems that pester the country. This unfortunate fact leaves Mother Nature to do some kind of a self-healing. The eroded moral values and culture of the people may take generations to recoup. On the other hand, those who have been physically suffering and wasting due to the onset of diseases could just gasp for short breaths of the polluted air while holding on to their dear life!

At the outset, even without mentioning figures to show its devastation, the effects of the ABUSED OPPORTUNITY in mining the natural resources of the Philippines are very obvious. However, if the government decides to put a stop to it to give Mother Nature some respite, it must have READY FALLBACK PROGRAMS, NOT JUST PLANS for the displaced miners, considering that this problem has been plaguing the country for decades. Farming and fishing in the same devastated areas is out of the question because of the polluted land, rivers and coastal waters.

The most realistic move is to relocate the affected people to ANY RURAL AREA of their own choice, an option which means reasonable and realistic compensation. However, this problem could be aggravated if the concerned mining firms would also ask for compensation due to the cessation of their highly-financed operation….a suggestion is to use the confiscated money from drug operations.

The mining industry in the Philippines is proof that progress has a dear price. It glaringly shows that any venture that has got to do with Nature’s exploitation can be devastating…even with promises of proper management, as there is an innate tendency of man to deviate from the proper course due to greed!

Never Underestimate a Photo

Never Underestimate a Photo
By Apolinario Villalobos

A photo should never be underestimated. Such printed record could send a person to jail, cause a breakup of once a strong relationship, destroy a person’s life, or worse, cause someone’s death. Psychologists use photos to test the soundness of their patients’ mind.  Due to the varying impression on particular images that people make, some view a certain photo with malice while others are nonchalant about what they perceive.

In the Philippines today, due to the scandals that are rocking the government system and its officials, even a lone photograph may be considered very important evidence. This is what’s meant by the line in a song that says, “…a picture could paint a thousand words”….words that are needed to establish a case or develop a story of a committed crime.

In this regard, the Vice-President Lenny Robredo posing with the Catholic bishops in a photo could mean a lot because the latter are detractors of President Duterte, while the former is viewed as being used as a tool by the opposition, as well as, the bishops themselves. Senator de Lima shaking hands with the purported drug lords can create so many stories about her link with them. And, President Duterte being kissed on a check by a beautiful admirer could send media people to their laptop and desktop computer to type a scoop.

The “photographic” memory of our ancestors enabled them to sketch animals and their daily activities on cave walls and ceilings that helped us understand our past. Though how crudely executed these records may be, without them, we may never have had a glimpse of what transpired in the past.

Photographs can also hide and reveal true events and situations, as well as, characters of people. To make any situation convincing before they are photographed, it is enhanced with props. On the other hand, happiness can be temporarily etched on a face – all for the sake of visual recordings that have distinct objectives. While some are used for deception, others have noble intent….the so-called visual “white lie”. And, this is how the “motion picture” or movie was conceived.

Today’s world of high technology is being made alive or perked up by photos. People practically want to record what they do, a manifestation of their ego which is the center of the “self”. That is why, inventors are not stopping from conceiving gadgets that would incorporate a photographic lens, such that wireless phones did not end as just an audio gadget, but later developed further to have a camera.  This resulted to some watches having camera, as well as, pens, buttons and many others.

Finally, that is how the “inventor” of the facebook raked in billions of dollars….open a site that would accommodate photos of events and frames of quotes. So, next time you open your facebook and post a photo on its wall, remember that you are making someone richer.

And, the next time you open your old albums of photos, cherish those faded records of the past. By the way, even old photos of Nora Aunor could command today a price of not less than 200pesos!

Notes: pagpapakasakit – sacrifice
             tuwina – always
             nalalagas – fell
             umalingawngaw – resounded
             ganid – selfish
             salarin – murderer
             kakutsaba- cohort

             siphayo - sorrow

The Commercial and Destructive Aspects of Inventions

The Commercial and Destructive Aspects of Inventions
By Apolinario Villalobos

It is all for the comfort and money that man has created “wants” in this world, hence, the various inventions. The “wants” are not necessarily the “needs”, as there are things that we can forego as they are not necessary. But, before the onset of what the modern man views as “civilization”, our ancestors were a satisfied lot. During the time, it was enough for a community of five families, for instance, to share a felled beast using spears, throwing sticks, and rocks. Our ancestors’ feet were also enough to bring them to where they wanted.

In time, however, the wizards among our ancestors thought of making mobility more comfortable and due to the growth of communities, competition for survival ensued. The need for security was conceived giving rise to more lethal, though, primitive tools. Instead of the simple tree barks to cover their private parts, they thought of using the skin of their prey. Wheels were invented and used not only to transport heavy goods but also in destructive chariots and later, in armored cars, etc., but most especially, for the comfortable mobility.

While the legendary Icarus thought of flying with the use of feathers, the Wright Brothers went further by using metals and woods assembled to harness the power of the wind to keep their contrived apparatus to glide and take on speed. The “standards” in quality of the contraption improved the invention until it went further, such as its other uses were conceived….based on what the time required in transporting people and goods, and later, totally become tools of destruction because of greed!

Telephone units before, had to have a component that must be cranked before it could be used while connected to each other with miles of long copper wire. Today, wireless telephones are inter-connected by satellites that hover above the earth. But, since people want more sophistications in such instrument, other features are added – camera, voice recorder, music player….and later on, used by evil-minded to set off bombs! On the other hand, who would have ever thought that drugs that were originally conceived to prolong life could become deadly, the same as with the chemicals that are supposed to preserve food?

Thousands of inventions have been initially intended for man’s comfort, convenience and survival, but his shrewdness and selfishness made him conceive their lethal uses…that at the end practically led him to his self-destruction!

Kahangalan ang Paglagay ng Sticker o Seal sa mga Bahay na Walang Adik o Drug Pusher

KAHANGALAN ANG PAGLAGAY NG STICKER O SEAL
SA MGA BAHAY NA WALANG ADIK O DRUG PUSHER
Ni Apolinario Villalobos

ISANG KAHANGALAN ANG GUSTONG MANGYARI NG DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT (DILG) NA LAGYAN NG SELYO O SEAL ANG MGA BAHAY NA ANG MGA NAKATIRA AY WALANG KINALAMAN O HINDI SANGKOT SA DROGA. AT, ANG PINAKAMATINDI AY ANG PAGBIGAY NG UTOS SA MGA BARANGAY.

MGA PANANAW KO KUNG BAKIT HINDI ITO EPEKTIBO:
·        MISMONG MGA OPISYAL NG ILANG BARANGAY O MGA VOLUNTEER NILA ANG SANGKOT SA DROGA.
·        NAILILIPAT ANG MGA STICKER DAHIL NAKADIKIT LANG.
·        PWEDENG LUMIPAT ANG MGA ADDICT AT PUSHER SA MGA BAHAY NA MAY STICKER.

HIGIT SA LAHAT, PAGKIKITAAN LANG NG MGA TIWALING LOCAL OFFICIALS ANG PAGPAPAGAWA NG MGA STICKER. MALAKING HALAGA ANG KIKITAIN DAHIL SA DAMI NG MGA BAHAY NA PWEDENG LAGYAN, LALO NA SA MGA SQUATTERS AREAS….MILYON-MILYON!

HUWAG MAGING BULAG ANG NAGMAMAGALING NA KALIHIM NG DILG DAHIL LANG ITINIGIL ANG “OPERATION TOKHANG”. MARAMING DAPAT GAWIN ANG DILG KUNG MAKIKIPAG-COORDINATE LANG ITO NG MAAYOS SA IBA PANG AHENSIYA TULAD NG DOH, DSW, AT DPWH, TULAD NG:

·        CONSISTENT NA PAGLINIS AT PAGTANGGAL NG KUMAPAL NA PUTIK SA MGA DRAINAGE
·        PAGTAPAL NG MGA LUBAK SA MGA KALYE NG MGA BARANGAY.
·        PAGPAPAAYOS NG MGA STREET SIGNS/NAMES NA KARAMIHAN AY SINIRA NG MGA KABATAANG WALANG MAGAWA.
·        PAGPAPABAWAL SA PAGGAMIT NG PRESERVATIVES SA MGA GULAY AT ISDA NA BINEBENTA SA MGA PALENGKE.
·        PAGPAPATUPAD NG CURFEW PARA SA MGA KABATAAN.
·        PAGPAPATUPAD NG MGA PROGRAMANG PAGKIKITAAN SA MGA DEPRESSED AREAS.
·        PAG-CHECK NG MGA PALPAK NA REPAIR SA MGA PROVINCIAL HIGHWAYS NA HALATANG PINAGKITAAN.

KUNG TUTUUSIN, DILG ANG MAY MAGANDANG MGA OPORTUNIDAD UPANG MAKATULONG SA MGA TAO NANG DIRETSAHAN, HINDI TULAD NG IBANG AHENSIYA NA LIMITADO SA ILANG SEKTOR AT PROGRAMA.

ANG DILG DAPAT ANG ITURING AN “UMBRELLA AGENCY” NG LAHAT NG AGENCY DAHIL LAHAT NG MGA PANGYAYARI SA BUHAY NG MGA PILIPINO AY NAGSISIMULA SA LOOB NG KOMUNIDAD NA GINAGALAWAN NIYA, MULA SA KALUSUGAN, DROGA, HUSTISYA, EDUKASYON, AT MARAMI PANG IBA.

Ang "Kahalagahan" ni Napoles bilang Ugat ng Pork Barrrel Scandal

ANG “KAHALAGAHAN” NI NAPOLES
BILANG UGAT NG PORK BARREL SCANDAL
Ni Apolinario Villalobos

UNETHICAL ANG GINAWA NI SOLICITOR GENERAL NA PAGSALITA TUNGKOL SA KASO NI NAPOLES DAHIL SINABI NITONG ABSUWELTO SI NAPOLES SA KASONG ILLEGAL DETENTION KAY LUY, PARA NA RIN NIYANG SINABI NA WALANG KASALANAN SI NAPOLES. SA ISANG BANDA, MAAARING MAY MABIGAT NA DAHILAN. ANG ILLEGAL DETENTION CASE AY PWEDENG PATIKIM LAMANG SA IBA PANG FAVORS NA PWEDENG IBIGAY KAY NAPOLES BASTA “IKANTA” NIYA ANG MGA “KLIYENTE” NIYANG MGA SENADOR AT KONGRESISTA, AT IBA PANG MGA OPISYAL NG MGA NAKARAANG ADMINISTRASYON.

PWEDENG GAMITIN SI NAPOLES NA STATE WITNESS DAHIL SIYA LANG ANG MAY KARAPATANG MAGTUTURO KUNG SINO SA MGA SENADOR AT MGA CONGRESSMAN, AT IBA PANG OPISYAL,  NA NAKIPAGKUTSABA O NAKIPAG-CONNIVE SA KANYA TUNGKOL SA PORK BARREL ANOMALIES. YAN ANG PINAKAMABISANG PARAAN UPANG MAKASUHAN ANG MGA TIWALI SA GOBYERNO DAHIL ANG MGA INFORMATION NA MAKUKUHA KAY NAPOLES AY MAITUTURING NA “FIRST HAND”….ANG MULA KAY LUY AY “SECOND HAND” LANG.

KUNG IDADAAN SA MATHEMATICS, SIMPLE LANG NAMAN ANG IPAPAKITA: ISANG NAPOLES NA ANG KATUMBAS AY NAPAKARAMING MGA SENADOR AT KONGRESISTA, AT KUNG SUWERTIHIN PA AY MGA NAGING KALIHIM O MGA OPISYAL NG MGA AHENSIYA.

HINDI NA ISYU ANG PERANG NAWALDAS DAHIL GINAMIT NA NG MGA SENADOR AT KONGRESISTA….WALA NA….LUSAW NA! PERO ANG NANDIYAN PA AY ANG MGA TAONG SANGKOT NA DAPAT MAPANAGOT….AT, ANG IBA AY NAKAUPO PA SA MGA BULWAGAN NG MGA MAMBABATAS AT NAGMAMALINIS.

ANG TAWAG KO SA MOVE NA YAN NG GOBYERNO AY ANG “PAG-UGAT”, O PAGDUKAL, O PAGHUKAY UPANG MATANGGAL ANG UGAT NG ISANG KASO. KAILANGANG TUMBUKIN ANG UGAT NA SI NAPOLES.

KUNG MATALINO ANG MGA ABOGADO NG GOBYERNO, LALO NA ANG SOLICITOR GENERAL, MADYIKIN NILA O GAWAN NG PARAAN KUNG PAANONG MAIPAKITA NA “GINAMIT” LANG SI NAPOLES O “PINILIT” NG MGA  TIWALING MGA SENADOR AT KONGRESISTA UPANG MAGLABAS NG PERANG PAMBILI NG PROJECT FUNDS. PALABASIN NILANG LEAST GUILTY SI NAPOLES UPANG MA-QUALIFY BILANG STATE WITNESS.

The Enduring Love of Linda (Salvacion) and Gil Carolino...a lesson for Valentine's Day

Posted on Sunday 12 February 2017

A Lesson for Valentine’s Day…

The Enduring Love
of Linda (Salvacion) and Gil Carolino
By Apolinario Villalobos

In marital companion ship, compatibility is crucial to make it enduring, in order for it to resist the threat of various temptations that could erode the relationship. Following the Chinese feng shui of relationships, both parties cannot be positive or negative. Either should be positive and the other, negative so that continuous motion is assured. The companionship should not be stagnant and this is is possible if the two “forces” are pushing or pulling each other. The forces are necessary for the couple to move on. But, it does not necessarily mean, that while one of them is good, the other one should be bad. What is meant here is the aspect of “giving way” to the other every time there is an uncalled for clash.

The test for the endurance of relationship also comes in times of needs – financially and physically. Some couples call it quits when they find difficulties in maintaining their affluent ways if one, or worst, both of them lost their job. There are also stories of abandonment when one of the parties got sick with incurable disease.

What happened to Linda and Gil is one for the record of marital relationship. Both seem to be on the right path as they reaped success after success since the time they started to build a home for their happy family. Gil began his career as a young CPA in Philippine Airlines, to become the youngest manager of the said airline. Linda was also a CPA but did not stop as such for she pursued her other love – Law. Despite their having three children, she endeavored to finish the course and being intelligent, passed the Bar with resounding success. Her feat gave her a a distinct mark when she worked for the Supreme Court where she was given an award, “Outstanding Award in the Practice of Law” for having won cases three in a row. A researched material that she completed was also used by the Philippine Senate against the former Chief Justice Renato Corona that led to the latter’s impeachment.

On the other hand, Gil was having a heyday with his smooth sailing along his airline career. From being a Manager of a Division that handled planning and marketing, and later product development, he moved up to become a Regional Vice-President, particularly, of Southeast Asia. It was at this point when Linda was already showing signs of weakness that was thought to be just an ordinary ailment. Meanwhile, their children grew to become successful in their own chosen career.

Millicent (Miyen), a successful CPA, married to Elmer Lobusta, and both blessed with children: John David, 15; Anna Therese, 13; Mary Catherine, 10. Miyen and Elmer are chapter Heads of Singapore Couples for Christ, while their children are members of Youth for Christ and Kids for Christ….the whole family serves during the Mass.

Kristine, married to Joseph Eric Mendiola, a computer technologist and team member of Japan’s hybrid car program, and blessed with children, Karmina, 16, who can read and write the Japanese Hiragana and Kanji alphabet; and, Jose Enzo, 12, an American citizen for being born in America.

April Ann, married to an Indonesian, Denny Han. April is a product of the Philippine Science High School and Ateneo from where she graduated with the course, Management Engineering and had an initial stint in Indonesia where she met her husband during one of the assemblies of the Singles for Christ. Their children are Tala Elizabeth, 5, considered a miracle baby being born prematurely at six months, thereby spending almost 3 months in the Neo Natal ICU…now a bubbly child, she attends nursery in Singapore with no trace of the harrowing experience as an infant. The youngest is Yumi Gabrielle, 17 months.

Despite her deteriorating health, Linda, did not show any trace of discouragement, especially, with the constant encouragement from the family. It came to a point, however, that she had to stay in bed more often, and during such crucial moments, Gil showed his resolve to stay by her side to attend to her needs. He finally resigned in 1998 as trips to the hospital had become frequent. In October 2009, Linda became totally bedridden after being diagnosed of degenerative nerve syndrome that affected her other organs.

Hospitalizations and medicines practically depleted the financial resources of the couple. Whatever savings they had were spent for the frantic desire to save Linda whose days were cheered by their children and their grandchildren. Unfortunately, as fate would have it, Linda gave up her struggle on October 10. Despite her emaciated state, her face is still a picture of graceful beauty without any sign of pain. Both Linda and Gil endured the challenges by hurdling the obstacles that they encountered along the way, as witnessed by their children and their husbands…lessons that they have surely learned.

Worth quoting from Gil is his life’s guiding inspiration as it makes him believe that …”we draw strength from everyone…and what keeps us going is also our strong and unwavering faith in the Lord….that we keep the trust, knowing that HE knows best….that we might be beset with problems and trials almost endlessly, but we never should never despair because we know that God loves us…we should try our best to fend off anxieties…as, God is our shield”.

Asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, “I would like to be remembered as someone who will sacrifice my own comfort to be able to give happiness to others”. He further added, “… people see me as “kuripot” (tightwad), but they just don’t know that I try to save every centavo I can because I want to give something to anyone whenever they come to our house for help. I don’t want to see them unhappy – poor relatives, poor neighbors, poor parishioners, poor countrymen, who got struck with calamities year-round.  Had I not sacrificed my own comfort, I would not have had anything to give them. And, I could not have managed my beloved Linda’s monstrous medical needs – as I would not want our children sacrifice for us…for as long as I can still manage it.”

Job Lowill Calumpang Benuya: Sings the Blues and Rocks with Country Music Like No Other

JOB LOWILL  CALUMPANG BENUYA: Sings the Blues
and Rocks with Country Music Like No Other
By Apolinario Villalobos

I first met Job when I was checking in for my flight back to Manila many years back when he was yet with Philippine Airlines that he joined on May 26, 1988. Unfortunately, when the airline underwent a spin-off in December 1, 2015, he was among those who reluctantly accepted the offered package.

I did not know then, that he is a multi-talented singer as his voice range covers country/folk, blues, rock and roll, aside from deftly playing the acoustic guitar. I first got the information about him from a friend who told me that there’s a PALer who performs at the Outback Grill. I forgot all about it until a PAL employee at the Davao airport confirmed the information, adding that it is Job, so I googled his name and true enough, his facebook is filled with photo showing him during animated performances and with his band. I was thrilled as I was also a folk singer during my early years in Manila to earn extra, a job on the side which my boss in PAL did not know. Compared to Job, however, my skill pales to his versatility.

Twice, I tried to connect with him while I was in Davao but failed due to his hectic schedule. I had no idea about the schedule of hi gigs so that I was at a loss as to where to find him. What I did was ask friends in Davao if they are familiar with him and aside from saying yes, they even added the information about his kerchief-covered head which they added, could be his distinct statement. And, they told me that he, indeed, is a singer.

With those confirmations, I decided to go ahead with this blog and just catch up with his live performance at any of the venues, after which I would write another one. Luck was with me when finally, we got connected and he agreed to send me the latest information about his gigs. I want to make sure where to find him, as soon as I got time for an overnight stay in Davao the next time I fly south.

So, here folks, is his schedule: Monday – Reggae Grill (Torres St.);  Tuesday – Outback Grill; Wednesday – Barukan Grill (Ma-a); Saturday – Uptown Grill (Cabantian); Sunday – Comus Grill (Mamay Road). Although, he performs solo, sometimes he plays with his band, JOVI AND THE COWBOYS, especially, when they are contracted.  The band members are Val Mat (acoustic guitar/vocalist); Edgar Echavez (bass); Jun Mercado (lead guitaris); Lito Bosque (drummer); Randy Avila (vocalist). Aside from playing the acoustic guitar and the band leader, he is also a vocalist of the band.

I relate with Job as we are both artists and I also sympathize with him when he confided that with a heavy heart he left PAL. Unlike me, however, I got burned up with my job in PAL so that leaving it gave me some sort of a relief, although, nothing can stop me from looking back to the airline that became so much part of my life. Perhaps, when I can have another chance to talk again to Job, I would advise him to move on with his music, as I did with my writing…and still remain a member of the original PAL family.

The Senate Investigation on the Corruption at the Bureau of Immigration, February 9

The Senate Investigation on the Corruption
At the Bureau of Immigration, February 9
By Apolinario Villalobos

Listening to the Senate hearing last February 9 could drive one to extreme irritation, what with humorous statements and insinuations, incongruous questions that got equally inconsistent answers and revelations about incompetence in the job of the presidential appointees as shown by their stammering and beating around the bush to hide their ignorance. One instance is about the allowing of a resource person to take the flight out of the country, despite the issuance of the “watch out bulletin” against him.

The responsible airport guys of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) reasoned out that the name reflected on the passport which is the “legal name” is different from what is reflected on the “watch out bulletin” which is the “nickname”, so he was allowed to take the flight.  These BI airport guys knew very well that despite the different names, they refer to the same person and still, they had the prerogative to remove any doubt by at least asking two IDs to establish the guy’s “legal” identity. What they did was a grave irresponsibility and misconduct as the guy who was allowed to depart was a very important resource person in a serious case. As usual, all that the ever &*^$#@ DOJ Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre did was just SUSPEND the incompetent BI officials. If the Senate investigating committee is looking at “connivance” as another facet of the case on hand, it should include Aguirre.

On the other hand, the Senate investigators and the DOJ secretary forgot, that because what has been issued was only a “look out bulletin”, the BI airport guys had no right to hold the subject, because only a “hold departure order” can make them so. Nothing about it has been mentioned in the course of the hearing. Had it been noticed, blames thrown at the airport BI guys could have boomeranged to Aguirre who is obviously at fault for the biggest oversight which shows another side of his incompetence that just keeps on ballooning – more than reason enough for his removal from his post.

Finally, it is observed that there is no seriousness in any hearing that the Senate conducts. Each one of the senators tries to outdo each other with humorous and ego-boosting statements, most of which are not necessary to the issues being discussed. The hall seems to be inflated with air of arrogance that could make its walls burst. They make investigations as basis for the formulation of laws…but what “good law” has been implemented “properly”…if, at all?

The Faceless Angels of Charity and their Big Heart

The Faceless Angels of Charity
And Their Big Heart
By Apolinario Villalobos

These faceless angels of charity are friends and strangers who, without hesitance extended their hand to others, and whose stories they learned through my blogs. Despite my disclaimer that my blogs about the needy are not meant to solicit but just to inform and share my encounters, thereby, encourage others to do the same, some still try their best to find ways and made alibis about their reason for helping.

A donor who lives in London sent her hard-earned savings and insisted that I accept it for the sake of our being town mates. One said it’s her first time to “really” share while another said that he got no time to go out and actually do the sharing, so he asked a favor that I do it for him. A single mom consistently shares whatever she could afford, although I know that she is also doing her own kind of random sharing. A businesswoman, a good friend, gives me an envelope every time we meet.

Two widows from America send either cash or balikbayan boxes, although, I asked one of them to stop sending her donations until I found an established institution to which she could directly send her boxes. A just-widowed friend sent the belongings of her late husband such as shirts, shoes, health supplements, etc. The shoes went to the students who deserve them, and for me to find out, I had to standby at Recto to make the right choice. The rest of the things went to the beneficiaries in Baseco (Tondo).

A Chinese student, who sought my help for his thesis via the internet, and son of a businessman, regularly shared his allowance for my projects, until I introduced him to the student to whom his money went. I lost contact with the Chinese student who I learned is now in mainland China and the poor student who graduated last year is now working in a BPO (call center). A former prostitute in Avenida who benefited from the shares of my friends has put up a small stall for pre-used clothing and silver jewelry, and has become a regular donor of tarpaulin sheets used as roof for makeshift huts and pushcarts.

A newly-ordained priest from Bulacan regularly meets with me to hand over an envelope. The envelope contains saved extra amount after his purchase of personal necessities for which the money that comes from his parents is intended. He does not want to keep the money due to his vows so he opted to share them with the needy after reading my blog about the pushcarts and the children in Divisoria who collected re-salable vegetables, though “reject” vegetables at dawn.

Four friends in PAL also send their shares through the local remittance outlets. They told me that although they do not make comments or “like” my blogs, they regularly follow them, especially, those that are about sharing. One of them expressed his desire to be part of our small of group of four, soonest as he has retired.

Stories of friends and strangers who have become part of my effort could fill pages….stories that I consider my priceless treasure for they have become my strength and inspiration to go on. These are stories that prove the assurance that, God will provide at the right moment for the right cause. These are stories that give me great relief as I have to admit that I could have been helpless without them due to my meager irregular income from home-based editorial job. These are stories of faceless angels and their big heart!

Pagmamahalang Walang Hanggan (para kay Linda at Gil Carolino)

Pagmamahalang Walang Hanggan

May namayapa man, ang naiwa’y nangako
