JONATHAN SEBALLOS...an Engineer who "rescues" and assists the distressed in President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat

JONATHAN SEBALLOS…an Engineer who “rescues” and assists the distressed in President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat
By Apolinario Villalobos

Jonathan whose late parents, Ciriaco and Erlinda Villalobos were educators  in President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat is an Engineer  but due to his preference to stay with his parents and siblings, did not venture far enough to earn much that he deserves with such profession. When his mother was totally bedridden and became comatose, he took care of her, till her death.

He endured financial difficulties and persevered with a “Job Order” position assigned at the motor pool during the time of the former mayor, Emilio Salamanca. Later, he moved on to work with the Treasurer’s Office. Today, under the administration of the lady mayor, Azel Valenzuela Mangudadatu, he is at the helm of the President Quirino-DRRM, involved in rescues and control of risks.

At this time of the covid crisis, he personally escorts stranded farmers in the town, and who worked as sugar cane cutters, back to their home towns. Most often, he and his colleagues who alternate in driving the van would go home late but they endure the heavy task without a bit of complaint, in the name of compassion.

AZEL VALENZUELA MANGUDADATU...THE COMPASSIONATE AND HUMBLE MAYOR OF PRESIDENT QUIRINO, SULTAN KUDARAT

AZEL VALENZUELA MANGUDADATU...THE COMPASSIONATE AND HUMBLE MAYOR OF PRESIDENT QUIRINO, SULTAN KUDARAT
by Apolinario Villalobos
While still in Manila, I had been hearing stories about the "gorgeously beautiful mayor of President Quirino". My interest in Quirino was then limited to my book project about its history, Tacurong and the surrounding areas settled by Visayans from Panay. I also owe a lot of gratitude to the once known as Sambolawan because of the opportunity given to my elder sister Maria Erlinda and her husband Ciriaco Seballos who taught at the Central School until their retirement.
The first time I met the lady mayor was when I attended an occasion at the municipal gym many years back. There was no "presidential table" on stage or in front below, just chairs facing the stage, arranged theater-style. When she arrived, I was stunned by her beauty, clad in the Maguindanao dress that covered even her feet, aside from the tandong that framed her pretty smooth face. She was walking alone towards a vacant chair beside me, smiling, and what made me smile my best was when I heard her say, "nagpudut..." (ang init). There was only one stand fan then.
I had been writing about Quirino and my fault is I kept on forgetting about her. Actually, I was giving myself more chance to gather good impressions about her. At the onset of the pandemic, I read shoutouts about her benevolence and when I check posts, I failed to find even a single photo showing her. Shoutouts about the food she shared also came from the frontliners of the town. What I read were sincere testimonies.
Many Maguindanao vendor friends and Christians who know the family told me, "simple lang ang bahay nila....at hindi ka magugutom kung nandoon ka dahil makakakain ka kung ano ang meron sila....wala silang pinipiling tao...). (Their home is simply furnished...you won't be hungry while there... whatever food they have is shared with visitors, whoever they are...),
The lady mayor is an Ilocana and hails from barangay Mangelen, her parents being among the pioneer families in that locality. She is an epitome of a person who has successfully blended the two major cultures in her person. I was greatly impressed when she thanked me with "Inshallah", as a closing statement in our very short exchange of pleasantries via the messenger...to which I now respond with...Allahu Akbar!...GOD IS GREAT!

TIKUG MATS STARTED MY ADVOCACY IN MANILA

“Tikug” Mats Started My Advocacy in Manila
But Nurtured as a Student in NDTC
By Apolinario Villalobos
After my stint in Tablas station (Romblon) with an initial job as Ticket/Freight Clerk of Philippine Airlines in early ‘80s, I was transferred to the Tours and Promotions Division in Manila. For practical and economic reasons, I stayed in a boarding house along Airport Road in Baclaran, as our office was at the old Domestic Airport (today, Terminal 4). During the time, what is now as ASEANA City, was yet, a body of water – Manila Bay, from the seawall of which the famed sunset could be clearly viewed. From late afternoon to early evening, I and some of my co-boarders would spend time at the seawall killing time. We would observe some people dragging their belongings in plastic and tattered shoulder bags while strolling along the boulevard, some were with their family. Before we would go back to the boarding house, we observed them spreading blankets on the grassy ground on which they rested for the night.
The scenes of elderly people and children sleeping on the ground without mat made me restless for several days. When I went back alone one early evening at around 6pm, I strolled up to the portion of the boulevard in front of the Aristocrat Restaurant in Ermita. I saw the same scenes – people lying on spread cloths and blankets on the grass.
When Boy Loquias, a new PAL recruit who was undergoing training at the PAL Training Center at the Gate 1 of Nichols Air Base joined us at the boarding house, I was glad upon learning that he was from Bohol which afforded me the opportunity to speak in Cebuano more often. When I brought him to the then, Dewey Boulevard, he was amazed to find the boulevard sleepers. Jokingly, he said that we better join them rather than spend for the boarding house. Honestly, however, he confided that something must be done to help them and asked, “asa ang SWA?” (“where is SWA?”, for which he meant Department of Social Welfare or DSW). When I mentioned giving them cheap “tikug” mat from Mindanao, he agreed. During the time, a piece of said mat was priced between 40-50pesos at the Islamic Center in Quiapo, unlike today that a single-sized costs between 120-150pesos. “Tikug” mats which are colorfully dyed are made in Cotabato.
From then on, I scrimped on my personal needs to save for mats. When Boy Loquias learned about my plan, he gave me part of his training allowance. Another co-boarder, Sammy, who was a member of the combo that performed at the Ugnayan Beer House, across our boarding house, also contributed. Initially, we were able to purchase 2 dozens of mats for which I was able to get a discount. It was not enough. I raised another amount from my saved per diem allowance, as my job then, required me to travel a lot. I also refused to accept the contribution of Boy whose allowance was just enough for his needs, especially, from Sammy who had two kids left with his wife in Naga City.
My visits to the Islamic Center in Quiapo for purchases of “tikug” mats led to my side trips to “Avenida” known for prostitutes who could be seen prowling the avenue for prospective customers, from early afternoon to early morning, the following day. I was staggered by what I observed and experienced at the Avenida. Daringly-dressed women openly made proposals while holding my hand but which I gently refused. On early mornings, not yet 7AM, thickly-rouged and obviously ageing prostitutes would ask an amount for a cup of coffee in exchange for sexual favor. From such encounters, I was able to strike friendship with many of them that developed into trust which became my passport to their dwellings in the slum along the banks of Reina Regente River. There, I met snatchers, swindlers, sex peddlers and their families. As pre-planned, I did not give them my real identity for my own safety. What they knew was that I was a job-seeker from the province and my thick Cebuano accent helped a lot, as many of them were also Bisaya.
Events oozing with colorful adventures made my curiosity stronger that led me farther to Arranque, Divisoria, Pritil, Malabon, Bagong Bayan (Dasmariἧas, Cavite), Tala Leprosarium, and Baseco Compound where I was able let out my pent up desire to share. It also led me to three other guys who had the same desire and with whom blessings were shared with those dwelling along the bank of Pasig River and Recto yearly, from the last week of November to the first week of December.
My advocacy was nurtured while I was a student of Notre Dame of Tacurong (NDTC) and nobody, even my family and closest friends knew about it, not even my colleagues in PAL later on, except Boy Loquias who was assigned at Tablas after his training, and where he raised his family. It was only when I shared my “adventures” on facebook due to the prodding of some friends, though with much hesitation, that they came to know about them. I just consoled myself with the thought that my sharing such adventures would, hopefully, make others realize that one need not be rich to be able to share blessings with others...and, that they can do the same, if they wish.

See with Our Heart, Feel with Our Kindness

See with Our Heart,
Feel with Our Kindness
By Apolinario Villalobos

Our eyes perceive the world
That’s all that they can do;
But there’s more beneath
The surface of everything
That only the heart can see –
If strengthened with fidelity.

Touching the lives of others
Some do with false charity
They, who think, food is enough
They, who think, money is fine
But given devoid of kindness
All effort becomes worthless.

Look around with our heart
Touch others with kindness
Those are what we should do
To realize our purposes in life –
Live and share, love sincerely
And thank the Lord as we pray!

Tacurong: The Cosmopolitan City of Southern Mindanao...thanks to Mayor Lina Montilla's Compassionate Administration

Posted on Monday, 5 June 2017

Tacurong: The Cosmopolitan City of Southern Mindanao
…thanks to Mayor Lina Montilla’s Compassionate Administration
By Apolinario Villalobos

The tag of Tacurong City, “Limpyo Tacurong”, means “Clean Tacurong”. This is an offshoot of the Resolution 021-6th SP, Series of 2014 that created the “LIMPYO KALOG” PROGRAM primarily authored by Hon. Psyche Sucaldito, with co-authors: Hons. Joselito L. Cajandig, Benjamin P. Fajardo, Jr., Welson U. Ferrer, Cirilo Y. Flores, Rodrigo P. Jamorabon, Ariel Ferdinand M. de la Cruz, Jose Remos P. Segura, and Paulino R. Ledda . The resolution was necessitated by the onset of dengue fever during the time, making the cleaning of canals/waterways and street potholes with stagnated water as targets. The resolution also called for the participation of residents and stall owners in the market and whose trades required water, such as fish and meat vendors, carinderias and beauty salons. The ordinance enjoined practically, all Tacurongnons to keep their premises generally clean, hence,  also required the cutting of grasses that mosquitoes use as breeding grounds during the rainy season.

When I visited the city lately, particularly, the wet market, I was impressed by the sight of a buko juice vendor sweeping the area around his pushcart and table for the plastic tumblers and juice jar. He also neatly stacked empty green buko shells and their trimmings inside the pushcart. Beside him during the time was also an ambulant fish ball vendor who was picking up barbecue sticks and plastic tumblers that he deposited in a garbage bag positioned not far from his cart.

When I entered the wet market, I was equally impressed by the generally clean fish and meat sections, and was further surprised because even the stalls for the fresh fish such as mudfish, catfish, tilapia, and gourami, did not give out a foul smell! The floor was of course, wet but not “flooded” with water from the concrete stalls, as the latter were constantly wiped by the vendors.

What I observed were manifestations that the “LIMPYO KALOG” has been consistently implemented. A “bonus” for the shoppers is the utmost courtesy of the public market personnel such as, gate overseers and the public toilet attendants. The city administration is also very humane as regards the collection of the daily local market tax imposed on vendors. I found out that the “arkabala” that the vendors pay is very affordable at 5 to 10 pesos. The incumbent mayor, Lina Montilla clearly understands the situation of the small business folks who try to make both ends meet in order to survive. In this regard, one can find old women selling wild vegetables such “kulitis” (local spinach), kangkong, lupô, and small snails, that they gather from rice fields, or children selling banana blossoms, the proceeds from which may not even be enough to buy rice that could feed a family of four for two days…yet, they persist in doing their honorable trade rather than beg.

The city is not rich compared to her contemporaries. It is for this reason that much-desired projects take some time to be realized. But, what is important at the moment, though, is the peaceful co-existence of the Muslims and Christians, be they neighbors or vendors. The city has even taken an extra step that gave her a compassionate image – by welcoming tricycle drivers from the neighboring towns of Quirino, Buluan, Lambayong, Tantangan, and Isulan. This is the reason, perhaps, why hospitals, clinics, barber shops, restaurants, groceries, and beauty parlors pockmark the length of avenues and the public market, as they also serve the residents of the mentioned towns that surround the city. All are manifestations of “goodwill” for which the city has been known for…or simply put, the city of Tacurong is not selfish…or shall we call it, economic strategy?

The influx of shoppers from neighboring towns could be observed during market days such as Wednesday and Saturday during which all alleys of the market are filled with farm produce from as far as Esperanza, Bagumbayan, Isulan, Lambayong, Buluan, Quirino, New Iloilo and Tantangan, and marine products from General Santos City, Davao, and Zamboanga. The air is filled with intermingling of dialects such as Hiligaynon, Cebuano, Ilocano, Maranao, Iranun, Maguindanaoan, and of course, Tagalog. Haggling is encouraged by vendors themselves, as most of them had to dispose of their wares at noon time. Interestingly, prevalent is the use of “’gâ”, the contracted form of “palanggâ” or “pangga” which in Tagalog means, “mahal”, and in English, “love”. When one haggles in the market, he or she says, “pila ni ‘gâ ?” (love, how much is this?)… or if one asks a friend if he or she has taken her meal, the question is, “nakakaon ka na, ‘ga?”the word is used with honest brotherly and sisterly connotation, without even a faint trace of carnal desire.

Tacurong City’s strategic location at the crossroads of South Cotabato, North Cotabato/Davao, and Maguindanao, has not just made her as some sort of the nucleus of the region’s commerce, but has also given her an impression as the COSMOPOLITAN CITY OF SOUTHERN MINDANAO.

My Great Friend, Jimmy....altruistic to the end

My Great Friend, Jimmy…altruistic to the end
By Apolinario Villalobos

When we are at the lowest ebb of our life that include days we spend in bed due to an ailment, the natural thing to do is for us to exert an effort  to show our best. But there are some who make cover-ups, apprehensive that others will know their situation. By being honest, however, does not mean that help is being solicited. We can even gain respect and admiration, by showing others our endurance during such trying times. The respect and admiration, as the fruits of our effort are sweeter, than the casual reaction from others whose view of our real situation is obstructed by hypocrisy.

Jimmy was a friend who used to hold a high executive position in a trading company. Even before I started blogging, he was well-informed about my small projects in Tondo and Divisoria as he was a regular donor. We met at the Mary Johnson Hospital in Tondo many years back, where he visited a staff of his office, while I visited the daughter of a friend from Baseco compound who was confined due to dengue. His sincere friendship punctuated by his giving me his business card made me divulge to him my real identity, but implored him to keep it to himself. I explained that I do not reveal my identity to those whom I extend a little help that I could afford, so that I had been known to them by another name.

He failed to save much needed cash for his retirement because much of what he earned went to friends who sought his financial help.  To make the story short, when he resigned due to a prolonged ailment, he was left with an almost depleted savings. Every time I visited him, we would talk about his friends who became successful in their jobs. His statements were always ended with “ I am thankful that they made it…”. Truth is, he had been instrumental for their success. Some were his subordinates whom he pushed with deserved promotions and guaranteed referrals. Some were given financial assistance as a start-up for a small business.

The cancer in his bones resulted to his losing weight considerably which practically changed his physical appearance. Despite the transformation, he could still muster a smile, as if nothing had changed. He was financially handicap, but he did not cover it up.  When he became bedridden, the first to go was his car, followed by his studio-type condo, after which his nephew accommodated him in his home in Malabon. His wife with whom he had no child, left him for a Chinese boyfriend she met in a casino.

Jimmy gained much respect because of what he showed, aside from reaping admiration from neighbors and friends who visited him daily. The disease that physically emaciated him did not change his image that had been exuding an aura of contentment.  He passed away two months ago (January 2017). After his cremation, I was invited by his nephew and his wife for a dinner at their home after which an envelope was handed to me. It contained PHP3,730.00, balance of his savings and with it was his passbook. Outside the envelope was his simply handwritten note, “God be with you always in all you do”.

The Writer

The Writer
By Apolinario Villalobos

A true writer should be sensitive to the feelings of others, be they read as expressly written or viewed as shown through actuations. He should be able to develop any form of literary expression out of spoken words or written “bullet statements”. With facebook as an example, an adept writer should be able to develop a poem out of the comments on a certain posted photo. Comments about the photo are the “thoughts” of the facebook owner who posted it and a poem that is developed out of them by a writer should be rightly attributed to him….the writer being just the “editor”.

The writer should not constrain himself from writing the name of the source of the thoughts in the byline of a literary expression, be it a poem or an essay. Many people are frustrated writers and poets. They have thoughts that float in their mind, but they just do not know how to capture them. They may enumerate the words down but they do not know which to put ahead of the rest, which of them to comprise the content, and which word to end their presentation. This is where the writer-friend comes in….lend a hand….put substance to the words or discerned thoughts that are not yet expressed but are expected, as feelings are universal and interpretations vary only according to situation, but words are the same.

Some people show signs of literary talent but are shy to let them out. Their latent talent is discerned through the kind of words that they use in making comments on facebook posts or in the way they use them. These are the people who should be given utmost understanding. In the end, if the effort has made somebody happy, exert more of it….help many more shy people. This is what a “writer” should do…encourage others to express themselves.

The Faceless Angels of Charity and their Big Heart

The Faceless Angels of Charity
And Their Big Heart
By Apolinario Villalobos

These faceless angels of charity are friends and strangers who, without hesitance extended their hand to others, and whose stories they learned through my blogs. Despite my disclaimer that my blogs about the needy are not meant to solicit but just to inform and share my encounters, thereby, encourage others to do the same, some still try their best to find ways and made alibis about their reason for helping.

A donor who lives in London sent her hard-earned savings and insisted that I accept it for the sake of our being town mates. One said it’s her first time to “really” share while another said that he got no time to go out and actually do the sharing, so he asked a favor that I do it for him. A single mom consistently shares whatever she could afford, although I know that she is also doing her own kind of random sharing. A businesswoman, a good friend, gives me an envelope every time we meet.

Two widows from America send either cash or balikbayan boxes, although, I asked one of them to stop sending her donations until I found an established institution to which she could directly send her boxes. A just-widowed friend sent the belongings of her late husband such as shirts, shoes, health supplements, etc. The shoes went to the students who deserve them, and for me to find out, I had to standby at Recto to make the right choice. The rest of the things went to the beneficiaries in Baseco (Tondo).

A Chinese student, who sought my help for his thesis via the internet, and son of a businessman, regularly shared his allowance for my projects, until I introduced him to the student to whom his money went. I lost contact with the Chinese student who I learned is now in mainland China and the poor student who graduated last year is now working in a BPO (call center). A former prostitute in Avenida who benefited from the shares of my friends has put up a small stall for pre-used clothing and silver jewelry, and has become a regular donor of tarpaulin sheets used as roof for makeshift huts and pushcarts.

A newly-ordained priest from Bulacan regularly meets with me to hand over an envelope. The envelope contains saved extra amount after his purchase of personal necessities for which the money that comes from his parents is intended. He does not want to keep the money due to his vows so he opted to share them with the needy after reading my blog about the pushcarts and the children in Divisoria who collected re-salable vegetables, though “reject” vegetables at dawn.

Four friends in PAL also send their shares through the local remittance outlets. They told me that although they do not make comments or “like” my blogs, they regularly follow them, especially, those that are about sharing. One of them expressed his desire to be part of our small of group of four, soonest as he has retired.

Stories of friends and strangers who have become part of my effort could fill pages….stories that I consider my priceless treasure for they have become my strength and inspiration to go on. These are stories that prove the assurance that, God will provide at the right moment for the right cause. These are stories that give me great relief as I have to admit that I could have been helpless without them due to my meager irregular income from home-based editorial job. These are stories of faceless angels and their big heart!

On the Counting of Blessings

On the Counting of Blessings
By Apolinario Villalobos

Many who thought they are “successful” because of earned scholastic degree from prestigious learning institution or in position of wealth that they are  enjoying, but amassed by their parents, unfortunately, do not know how to ”count” their blessings. We find these people in the high-end business districts of the city surrounded by hundreds of their staff; in government halls, occupying top and sensitive positions; and ritzy subdivisions as they immerse themselves in luxury. Surprisingly, many of them are far from being satisfied as their thoughts are occupied with schemes on how to earn more money – at all cost.

It is this selfish desire on the part of business moguls to get richer that made them forget the plight of those who sacrificed to build their pedestal of affluence. They forgot to return the favor, so that while they are wallowing in prosperity, those who are responsible for their wealth subsist on sub-standard wages.

Many government officials who became influential and those elected by the people forgot that their wages come from the pocket of ordinary citizens.  Instead of being grateful and do their best for the benefit of those who voted for them, they rob the government coffer, or worse, act as if they are the master of those who put them where they are.

Instead of counting their blessings and be grateful to God for what they already have, many people still want more at the expense of others. That is the simple logic why the world is convulsing with strife today. Take away selfishness and what takes place is compassion. Take away greed and what takes place is altruism. Take away exploitation and what takes place is care. Take away hatred and what remains is love. But these are just suppositions, as in unfortunate reality, greed prevails among men.

Counting our blessings will not take hundreds of fingers unless we include the spoons, forks, cups, beddings, clothes, and everything inside our home. That is not what I mean. Blessings can be translated into the comfort in life relative to the situation where we are. If we are in the city, comfort is viewed differently from the one being enjoyed in the countryside. Most importantly, we should not compare ourselves with others, as their blessings are definitely different from ours, if we base what we have gained on the standards that man, himself, has invented.

Blessings may not always be tangible or recognized. They can be felt such as satisfaction in life that cannot be described but can be translated into happiness, yet they can be counted if we are diligent enough to count the days when we are happy or sad. But nobody wants to do that, instead, we just do not give a damn if it is a Monday or a Tuesday or a Wednesday when we had been joyful or sad.

For as long as we are happy, let us just be in such state and be thankful that we still breathe. WE SHOULD LEARN HOW TO COUNT OUR BLESSINGS, INSTEAD OF ASKING FOR MORE. LET THE OTHER BLESSINGS BE ENJOYED BY OTHERS!

Posted on Tuesday, 17 January 2017

WALANG SINO MANG DAPAT MAGKWESTIYON. KUNG MAY GUSTONG MAGREKLAMO, MAGKITA NA LANG KAMI SA IMPIYERNO! ANG GUSTONG BUMATIKOS DIN SA MGA MAIINGAY NA YUDI…..NG MGA OUTDATED NA OBISPO GUMAMIT NA LANG NG MAS MAKULAY NA MGA SALITA.)

LEONIDA....the reason why I endure life in this world

LEONIDA…the reason why I endure life
in this world
By Apolinario Villalobos

She is my elder sister, deaf and mute since birth, and is more than seventy years old. I cannot imagine myself dead ahead of her. She is the reason why I kept on telling classmates before, that I will not settle down with a family of my own as foremost in my mind was take care of her until she dies.

Despite her handicap, she took care of us, her younger siblings, nephews, nieces, and their children. We communicated through a sign language that only our family understands. It was she who developed my love for vegetables, as she would gather saluyot, kulitis and lupo from the yet, grassy, town plaza which was in front of our house. Sometimes she would gather wild mushrooms beside the fence at the back of our house. She would simply cook them with whatever onion, ginger, and tomatoes that can be found in our kitchen. She would boil thickly sliced green jackfruit, for us to be dipped in soy sauce which constituted our lunch when there was no rice to cook.

Her intelligence and curiosity are such that she is fond of browsing through magazines including the comic magazines of the yesteryears. She would collect them in several boxes. Had we thought of keeping them, we could have been rich because a copy of “Hiwaga” komiks today costs not less than Php200. While she was doing her own collection of komiks, I collected my own pages of newspapers used as absorbent protection of dried fish in boxes that our parents ordered from Iloilo and Cebu to be sold in our small stall in the market. I was not yet of school age at that time during which she would observe me as I scribbled on the ground using a twig, the words that I copied from the dried-fish smelling papers, especially, “Purico”, a very popular brand of lard.

When we got completely orphaned, she joined me and an elder brother, in washing bottles and pasting of labels on them for Panay Vinegar, the first business entity, though, home-based, in our town. It was located in our ancestral house that we rented out to a Chinese businessman who treated us, as members of his family. I was in my first year high school then, during which we would stay late at night, especially, if orders were overwhelming, as they would come from store owners in neighboring towns. That was how we earned money.

Later, she was taken in by our late elder sister, Erlinda (Mary to us and her friends) a teacher at the former Sambulawan Elementary Schhol (today, President Quirino). She practically took care of her four children, May anne (Inday), Toto, Neneng, and Nonoy until they got families of their own, as she spent more time with them, than with us. Both my elder sister and my brother-in-law, Ciriaco (Ciring), are gone.

When I was yet with PAL, she was the reason why I would always come home even for a short while. I would take the first flight for Davao, transfer to an aircon van upon arrival for our place which takes 3 hours to reach, and after lunch would leave again for Davao to catch up with the first available flight back to Manila – on the same day. I felt that was all she wanted – see me even for just a short time. An important gift to her is a copy of the glossy Mabuhay magazine which she would lovingly caress upon receipt, open the pages and gawk at the photos.

She is also among the reasons why I believe in the wisdom of God for having brought me back to the point in my life where I made a decision to take care of her, to reaffirm it…after several disastrous living-in relationships, and which further made me ponder that my family is NOT limited to my blood relations but the rest of His creatures who I can touch. Where she is now living comfortably is her comfort zone, from which I could not take her away, as she would be emotionally distressed.

It took time for me to decide to finally bring out her story. But I am forced by the circumstance that some people cannot accept their great fortune of having normal and successful siblings and children, and loving wife, and presently enjoying the laughter of their grandchildren. I want them to compare their situation with mine. I cannot even settle down again as I might be unfortunate to get a partner who will not accept my elder sister. That is how I am simply looking at my life. Had my sister been normal and happily settled with a family of her own, I could be somewhere else, most probably in a depressed area, living with the people with whom I feel most comfortable.

Be Like a Tree

Be Like a Tree..
By Apolinario Villalobos

A tree, though standing still
and on a windless day
with not even a rustling leaf
is still erect and majestic -
host to winged creatures
that in the sky frolic.

We can be like a tree
by being still and patient -
under a heavy burden
in times of challenges,
we should not waver
but strive for success!

Barazel "Bob" Salazar: From Security Guard and Ateneo Professor, to PAL Executive

Posted on Monday, 26 December 2016

Barazel “Bob” Salazar:  From Security Guard
and Ateneo Professor, to PAL Executive
By Apolinario Villalobos

I met him when I had a short tour-of-duty (TDY) in Masbate as a ticket clerk, a few months after I joined PAL, and when Tablas station (my first assignment) was temporarily closed for runway improvement. During the time, the station Supervisor was Rudy Cid and the Load Controller was Jolly Fernandez, who resigned from PAL to run for mayor of the said town, against one of the Espiἧosas, and although, he won, his stint was cut short by his violent death from the hands of an assassin.

I vividly recalled the day when Bob and Rudy Cid asked me to leave the check-in counter during my confrontation with one of the bodyguards of the mayor (an Espiἧosa) as regards their package using the “padala system”. Although, the said system could be tolerated for compassionate reason, some parties abuse it, and being new, I was very strict in following the rules that I learned during my training. I had no knowledge then, about the local politics in Masbate, and it was only when the flight has left that they explained to me everything…about the Espiἧosas. From then on, Bob became more vigilant in checking during flight days if personalities that could provoke me at the check-in counter were around. If none, I was allowed to go on with my checking in of passengers.

I had no idea of how Bob was able to break into the airline industry. I was surprised then, when during a meeting lately, he told me that he went through a series of discouraging and harrowing experience before finally securing a job in PAL as a Ticket/Freight Clerk. His father was a Court Interpreter while his mother was a school teacher who died when he was in second year high school. His father remarried  but continued taking of them, albeit, with difficulty. It was during the time when they experienced receiving food from the relatives. He settled down at age 19, while he was in high school. To help his family, he did odd jobs selling newspapers, cleaning buses, working at construction sites, and as surveyor assistant. It was when was married when he pursued his college education and wife helped him financially until he graduated. During the time, he was working as a security guard, an inspiring fact that he proudly divulged to me without any qualm.

After graduating from college, he worked as Inventory Clerk, and shortly, joined PAL  as Ticket/ Freight Clerk assigned in Masbate station, But when he was assigned in Naga as Station Agent, he pursued his Master’s Degree at the University of Nueva Caceres. To help him augment his income he taught a the Ateneo de Naga in the evening. He was able to finish his MBA in 1987 at Naga, and the following year, he was assigned back to Masbate but at the time, as Branch Manager. He moved on as Branch Manager of San Jose (Mindoro) in 1992. His teaching and post-graduate studies were not cut short, although, he was transferred to other stations on temporary duty.

Our path again crossed when he was assigned at International Sales Office at S and L building along Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City. That was the time when the Philippines and Guam Region was merged with the International Sales-Philippines which was considered as the company’s sales “flagship”. When I left the company, I learned about his series of promotions that he more than deserved.  He was promoted as Product Manager in 1998; assigned in Iloilo as Branch Manager in year 2000; Cargo Marketing Manager in Manila up to 2005 during which he authored the RHUSH which raked in millions of dollars of cargo revenue for the company. Still in 2005, he was promoted as Asst. VP for Visayas; and, finally, in 2010, sent to Japan as Country Manager. Today, he is happily retired, but grateful to PAL with which he spent more than half of his fruitful life.

Children of Dawn

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Children of Dawn
By Apolinario B Villalobos

I call them children of dawn
Oblivious to the cold
Who on the paved sidewalk
Are peacefully sprawled.
With empty stomach
They stare at the wave
Of people who rush by,
Inhale the exhaust of cars
And bathe in the dust
That the wind sweep at them,
Unmindful still of the heat
That the sun beams
As it reaches its zenith
Signaling the half-day cycle
Of Mother Earth.

Surviving on morsels
Found in garbage bins…
With glee, smiles at found
Unfinished sandwiches
Half- eaten breads
Half- rotten fruits,
Thankful for them
Just like the birds of the sky
The fish in the vast oceans
Trees that on polluted air survive
And other creatures of the wild;
These children of dawn
Are luckier than most of us -
With innocently sparkling eyes
And simple, yet, virtuous desires!

A Surprise Visit to NDTC Molders of Youth...Ms. Norma Rafael and Mr. Morito Parcon (Davao City)

A Surprise Visit to NDTC Molders of Youth
…Ms. Norma Rafael and Mr. Morito Parcon (Davao City)
By Apolinario Villalobos

It was an unholy hour in the morning of Thursday, around 7AM when I trudged my way toward the gate of Ruby Subdivision to search for the home of the noted teachers of Notre Dame of Tacurong, the former Norma Rafael and Morito Parcon, but now lovey dovey partners for life. I took a tri-sikad (foot-pedaled pedicab) whose driver fortunately knew them, as Mr Parcon also served as a president of the homeowners association. When I knocked at their gate, it was their eldest, Toto, who answered my call and told me that his parents were attending that day’s Mass. I learned that they never miss a single Mass every day of the week.

The imposing Mt. Apo at 10,311 feet above sea level, practically loomed behind their home at the western dead-end portion of their “village”. The medicinal herbs that practically surround their home were a delight to the eyes. Due to the abundance of turmeric, they have ventured into packing of its powder form in capsules which at Php6 each could be considered the cheapest in the market. But one has to knock at their gate to make a purchase as their “business” is home-based and was originally intended to “kill” boredom and time to keep Mr. Parcon busy after having been hospitalized for a long time.

Our talk dwelt on the good old days in Notre Dame of Tacurong when Mr. Parcon was teaching Political Science in college while Ms. Norma Rafael was molding young girls at the former Girls Department which was under the administration of the Dominican Sisters (Order of Preachers). The college and Boys High School departments were, on the other hand, under the wings of the Oblate priests (Oblates of Mary Immaculate) with the assistance of the Oblates of Notre Dame (OND) Sisters.

Mr. Morito Parcon could well be considered as the historian of our city, for coming out with an extensively-researched book on her political history that covered the days when Buluan served as the “Mother Town” until the administration of Jose Escribano, the controversial mayor who got involved in a murder case. It took Mr. Parcon some time and loads of patient interview of pioneer leaders and settlers who came from the Visayas and Luzon, as well as hectic days of poring over filed records of early local government offices.

We mentioned names of his other students, some of whom were Ruel Lucentales, who was an Assistant Secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) at the time of his death, Jaime Bides who was a tour planning officer of the Marsman Travel and Tours, and later a businessman and resource person on spiritual matters, Renato Hingco who was connected with the Department of the Budget and Management (DBM) and Felizardo Lazado who was also with the DSWD before occupying an important position in the Ministry of Human Settlements later on. On the side of the Girls’ Department, names such as, Esther Bagsic, Talama Makilala-Saavedra, Rodina Ballena-Marasigan, Virgie Paragas, Esther Bagsic, Elma Darjan-Bides who is the current Tacurong City Accountant, and many more were mentioned. It was a meeting of quick reminiscences to the delight of my former teachers who, I had to help recall important moments in the past. For the photo opportunities, I asked them to pose in front of the tall and thickly growing wild sugar cane, crawling medicinal herbs, as well as, big pomelo look-alike and cure-all “magic fruits”. Some photos were taken with their eldest son, Toto.

I am sharing this experience to give an idea to viewers that even a simple visit can make important people in our life very happy…they who helped us grow into responsible citizens of the country. That is why, I smiled when, Mr. Parcon proudly declared, “I made them all”, referring to us, his students. Indeed, he did his best and I can attest to that!
